Talking With A Homo
For most researchers this Neanderthal individual at Kebara settled an old debate over the question of whether the Neanderthals could speak. Despite the fact that the skull has not survived, the skeleton possesses a modern-looking hyoid bone, which is an essential part of the vocal architecture of Homo sapiens, and it could well have functioned in Neanderthals the same way as it does in us. With this hyoid bone, the Neanderthals may have been able to produce a range of sounds to form speech of great complexity.
Hunters' Fetishes
Yet these burials do begin to hint at a difference in behaviour between the two varieties of human. This difference is seen not only in the bones, but in what was buried with them. At Amud a Neanderthal child burial is associated with a deer bone, and at Kebara a Neanderthal child burial contains a rhinoceros tooth. As for the early modern human sites, a burial at Skhul is associated with a large wild boar mandible, and deer antlers were placed on top of a child burial at Qafzeh. The Homo sapiens were buried with slightly more prominent animal bones than the Neanderthals were, and this hints at a more important distinction.

And Earth Boiling Again
If the Neanderthal story were a movie, this would be the dramatic final act. Their last 30,000 years of existence had incredible twists and turns – wild swings in temperature, extinctions of large European mammals and the intrusion of a rival human species into their homeland. It is the period for which we have by far the most evidence of their way of life, and yet it is a time that remains full of mystery.
Get Know Each Other
What do Neanderthal bodies tell us about them? From the basic structure of the bones, we know that they were extremely strong. From the extensive level of injuries found on the bones and the relatively young estimated ages at death for Neanderthals (few Neanderthal skeletons belonged to individuals who lived past the age of forty), we can surmise
Embarrassed?
Most of these cartoons boil down to just two joke archetypes: in one, the caveman family does things quite primitively and, in the other, the caveman family is surprisingly sophisticated despite living in a cave. In both cases the joke plays on our preconceived image of cavemen and Neanderthals representing the opposite of civilization and, ultimately, on our deep discomfort that our advanced society arose from humble and embarrassing beginnings. We laugh not because cavemen and Neanderthals are beneath us but because they are us.
