IS THİS TRUE?
Where did the moon come from? How did it get there? Scientists think that once, long ago, a small planet crashed into the earth, with an enormous BANG. The crash sent rocks and dust into space, and these slowly came together to form the Moon. In those days, the Moon was ten times closer to the Earth than it is today, and the Earth was spinning much faster. A day was only six hours long. But over millions of years, the heavy Moon made the Earth spin more slowly Today, the Earth spins only once in twenty-four hours.

think of a ball, about 230 mm across- a little bigger than a football. If that ball is the Sun, how big is the Earth, and how big is Jupiter, the biggest planet?Jupiter is a little ball- just 24 mm across. And you have to look hard to see the Eearth- it is a tiny ball, only 2 mm across. That's all. That's how small the Earth is. So the planets are very small, much smaller than the Sun. The planets ae made of just 0.2 per cent of all the dust and gas that went into the solar syste.

so the sun is enormously important to us. for us, it is the most important star in the universe. but where did the sun come from? How did it begin? that is the hardest quistion. and it is like another difficult quetion how did the earth and all the plants, begin? where did they all come from? It has taken scientists a long time to find the answeres to these questions.

That's incredible
Stars do not live for ever. New stars are made all the time, and old stars die, in the most amazgin ways. In every galaxy, there are large clouds of gas, called nebulae, new stars are born, There are small stars, middle-sized stars, and very large stars. Some of these large stars are a hundred times bigger than our Sun. These big stars do not live very long- only about ten million years- but their short lives are very exciting.

The light from the red star-Betelgeuse- has taken 643 years to travel to your eye. And the light from the blue star- Rigel- Has taken even longe: 773 years. Light travels at about 300.000 kilometres evry second, which is 9,460,730 million kilometres a year (we call that distance a light year). So that blue star, Rigel, is 7,313,144 billion kilometres away. But you can still see it- with your own eyes, without a telescope. That is amazing. Of course, you cannot see what Rigel looks like today- nobody can. You can only see qhat the star looked like 773 years ago. So when you look at a star like Rigel or Betelgeuse you are not just looking at something an enormous distance away; you are also looking back in time.
