James B. Patterson, ( d. 22 Mart 1947) genel olarak Amerikalı psikolog Alex Cross hakkındaki eserleri ile bilinen, ABD'li gerilim romanları yazarı.
Patterson 22 Mart 1947'de Newburgh, New York'ta ev hanımı ve öğretmen Isabelle (Morris) ile sigorta komisyoncusu Charles Patterson'ın oğlu olarak doğdu. Aile işçi sınıfındandı ve İrlanda asıllıydı.
Patterson 1986 yılında reklamcılık sektöründen emekli olmuştur ve zamanını roman yazmaya vermiştir. Romanları eskiden Washington Polis Departmanında ve FBI'da adli psikologluk yapmış ve günümüzde özel psikolog ve devlet danışmanı olarak çalışan Alex Cross etrafında şekillenir.
