Most of the Universe is space. Space is elastic: it can change and get bigger or smaller. Einstein published The General Theory of Relativity in 1915. He said that gravity changes space and time. the gravity of a planet or a star curves the space around it.
it is possible ti see a star behind the Sun because the Sun curves the space around it. the light from the star changes direction when it goes near the Sun.
Most scientists believe that our Universe began about 15 billion years ago.
In the beginning, all the Universe was compressed into a point smaller than an atom. Then this point exploded like a bomb. This explosion is called the 'Big Bang'. The Universe then expanded and the stars and galaxies were formed.
The Universe is still expanding. The galaxies are separating because the space between them is expanding, like pieces of fruit in a cake that is being cooked. The pieces of fruit represent the galaxies. The distances between the pieces of fruit are getting bigger because the cake is getting bigger.
Stars and planets are very very far from each other. Some stars are so far away that it takes millions of years for the light to reach us on Earth. We see the galaxies as they were millions of years ago!
