“If neurotic is wanting two mutually exclusive things at one and the same time, then I’m neurotic as hell.” The fig tree as a metaphor for my entire existence. Poetic, really. That paragraph changed the trajectory of my life. Nobody describes the feeling of paralyzing indecision and the desire to be everything everywhere all at once like Sylvia Plath does, i fear. A fractured psyche, a fractured narrative. It felt a bit disjointed and disorienting while reading, but i get it.

Only men would call this utopic because it’s patriarchal, misogynistic as hell (since ‘women are the common property of the community’) and the punishment for homosexuality is execution. The community/world-building for the City of the Sun made no sense by the way. It’s irrational and inconsistent, men are so stupid regardless of the era.

A book that makes you feel physically sick as you read it. I love reading about complex characters. Aside from being a brilliant character study, My Dark Vanessa is also an exceptionally smart exploration of the mind of a victim of abuse and grooming, child abuse, pedophilia, grief and trauma.
