I honestly don’t even know where to start. I wanted to read this book because the title and the concept caught my attention, but I can say it wasn’t exactly what I imagined. Did I like it? Did I enjoy reading it? Was I curious about what would happen next? Yes. In fact, since I had already read some of the books mentioned in the list, it was easy to understand the references. It was also written in good English — in my opinion, around a B1-B2 level — understandable for intermediate readers, with an interesting concept. Unfortunately, since the characters were of Indian background, there were some words and expressions I didn’t fully understand. I wish there had been explanations for them somewhere. They also talked about foods a lot, but I didn’t even know what most of them were. Then there was the thing Aidan did… I understand that sometimes not everything needs to be explained, but I still wanted more hints about it. I liked the idea of the story progressing through different books, but when we finally got to the books that gave the chapters their titles, I didn’t really like that the character was reading completely different books instead. The ending wasn’t bad, but it could have been better. I really liked Mukesh’s storyline and the friendships he made, but I can’t say I connected much with the main character, Leila. If you come across this book, I think it’s worth giving it a chance.

“Clearly, the only solution was for all of us to take one step backward so that the door could be pulled open. By this point a group of plumbers, a group of bricklayers, a group of hookers, a group of chimpanzees would have figured this out . But the room contained, unfortunately, a group of academics, and we couldn’t quite believe what had happened to us.”

There is actually nothing to say about the book, as it doesn’t have any engaging passages or a real plot. We are reading paragraphs about two friends who don’t have any emotional connection with each other but who are only attracted to one another sexually. I mean, normal people have feelings, daily routines, and sometimes interesting dialogues, but these two have absolutely nothing in common, neither daily routines nor any interesting actions happening in their lives. I chose this book because of its simplicity; it was a good choice for my language level, but there was nothing interesting or appealing in terms of the story or the characters. It’s good to see new writers doing interesting things, and even if I’m a bit distant from the bestseller shelves or new writers, I’d like to give this book a chance and maybe break my prejudices. Unfortunately, I didn’t like the book and saw it as a waste of time. Saying that makes me a bit sad because Sally Rooney seems to be a courageous person who raises social awareness about what is happening around the world. I’ll still keep my distance from her books, but I hope that won’t last forever.

It is a really great book that has a lot of great messages. Unfortunately, I only read 15% of it before the war happened in the Middle East and we started lacking electricity. So I ended up finishing it in two nights because of the power outages. This fast reading might have kept me from fully experiencing the book, because I prefer to read slowly and really invest in it. But still loved it

I read this book almost to the end, but unfortunately it wasn’t my kind. The constant repetition of low self-esteem, self-doubt, and similar thoughts started to feel monotonous rather than deep for me. While I understand that this reflects the author’s real struggles, I personally couldn’t connect with the narrative. Because of that, I would give this book a lower rating. Still, hearing that the author passed away recently made me read it with more empathy and respect.

I finally had a chance to read the original novel inspiring the many Zorro films in the 20th century. Unfortunately, the story and the book are not really worth mentioning from a literary point of view and they do not really cover any interesting or inspiring events that render it slightly readable.
