The vikings had effectively obliterated the written history of Northumbria and East Anglia. The Normans, by contrast, conserved at least some of what they found. Beowulf and Bede; Asser and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle ; the lives of Wilfrid, Dunstan, Oswald and Æthelwold – all survived the cultural revolution of 1066.
As the weeks wore on, and the onset of autumn approached, both commanders must have grown increasingly anxious, knowing they could not hope to hold their huge armies together for very much longer. At last, on 8 September, the waiting game ended when Harold reluctantly disbanded his forces. ‘The men’s provisions had run out,’ says the Chronicle , ‘and no one could keep them there any longer.’ The troops, raised from all over the country, were sent home, and the king returned to London. His timing, it turned out, was terrible. As soon as he arrived in the city, news reached him that enemy forces had landed. But they were not in southern England, and it was not the enemy he had been expecting. It was his troublesome brother Tostig, who had returned to Northumbria, accompanied by a horde of vikings.
Normandy was, in effect, the cross-Channel Danelaw – a wide area of north-western Francia that had been invaded and settled by vikings since the late ninth century. Its name, Normannia, meant ‘the land of the northmen’. When viking raids in the Channel had resumed, therefore, the duchy was not a target, but a friendly port of call, run by distant cousins – a place where ships could be repaired and refitted, and where plunder and slaves could be unloaded for profit.
