Tolstoi relates that when he was in the Army he saw one of his brother officers strike a man who fell out from the ranks during a march.
Tolstoi said to him:— “Are you not ashamed to treat a fellow human being in this way? Have you not read the Gospels?”
The other officer replied:— “And have you not read Army Orders?”
The winter of 1916–17 was one of the worst in European history, and it wrecked the harvests. The impact was less severe for Britain and its allies because they were able to import food. But the hunger struck Germans with full force while the British blockaded their ports. It had been Britain’s strategy for centuries, as they didn’t need a large land army when they controlled the seas. Densely populated European countries could not produce enough calories at home, so they needed to import grain from abroad. That’s what made the British blockade so deadly effective. At the end of October, the crusaders continued their march south along the coastal lowlands. A day or so later, they met up with several hundred men from Conrad's army (HRE Emp.), most of them starving, wounded or dying. They revealed that they were all that was left of the Imperial Army and that, far from gaining victory over the Turks, they had suffered a devastating defeat, with more than nine-tenths of their number being slaughtered. They warned that the Turks were now lying in wait for the French.
