Marianne gerçek hayatın çok uzakta bir yerde olduğu ve onsuz gerçekleştiği hissine kapılmıştı; yerini öğrenebilecek, bir parçası olabilecek miydi, bilmiyordu. Okuldayken bu hisse sık sık kapıldığı olurdu ama bu hisse gerçek hayatın nasıl göründüğüne ya da ne hissettirdiğine dair kesin bir görüntü eşlik etmezdi. Tek bildiği, gerçek hayat başladığında, artık onu hayal etmesine gerek kalmayacağıydı.
