Varlığın Buharlaşması
İvan Turgenyev’in Duman adlı eseri, ilk bakışta bir aşk romanı gibi görünse de akademik katmanlarında varlıkbilimsel bir krizin, klinik düzeyde bir psikopatolojinin ve toplumsal bir çözülmenin iç içe geçtiği çok boyutlu bir metindir. Romanın ontolojik temelini, adını da veren "duman" metaforu oluşturur. Bu imge, sadece politik tartışmaların boşunalığını değil, bizzat varlığın özündeki uçuculuğu ve hiçliği simgeler. Başkarakter Litvinov’un tren penceresinden dışarı bakarken ulaştığı "her şey duman ve buhardır" sonucu, Heideggerci anlamda "orada-varlık"ın (Dasein) kırılganlığını ve Schopenhauer felsefesindeki "istencin" beyhudeliğini temsil eder. Roman boyunca karakterlerin savunduğu tüm fikirler, politik idealler ve toplumsal roller, katı formlarını kaybederek birer illüzyona dönüşür. Bu durum, bireyin kendi varlığını üzerine inşa edeceği sabit bir özün yokluğunu ortaya koyan varoluşsal bir boşluk (nihilizm) doğurur.
Psikolojik açıdan incelendiğinde ise roman, bir irade felci ve patolojik bağlanma vaka çalışmasıdır. Litvinov, Rus edebiyatının tipik "gereksiz adam" karakterinin daha modern ve klinik bir versiyonudur. Onun yaşadığı durum, psikiyatride "aboulia" olarak adlandırılan irade kaybıdır; Litvinov kendi hayatının öznesi olmak yerine, olayların ve arzuların sürüklediği pasif bir nesne haline gelir. Bu pasiflik, onu İrina’nın narsistik ve yıkıcı çekim alanına karşı savunmasız bırakır. İrina karakteri ise modern klinik perspektiften bakıldığında, "Borderline Kişilik Bozukluğu" ve narsistik örüntüler sergileyen bir figürdür. Bunu okuduktan sonra kesinlikle eskiden olduğum kişi değilim. Bu noveleti bitirdikten sonra neler hissettiğim hakkında binlerce sayfa yazabilirim. İçimde nasıl bir boşluk hissettiğimi, sanki kitabın ana karakteri benmişim gibi nasıl yıkıldığımı... Ah Raif...
Bazen yapmadıklarımızın pişmanlığı daha sertdir yaptıklarımızdan. Ve korkaklık da bunun en büyük yardımcısı...
Şu anda size abartıyormuşum gibi gelebilir ama bu kitapta beni hem iyileştiren hem de mahveden bir şey var. Belki kendimden bir parça gördüğüm için, belki hiç yaşayamadığım bir duygunu bana en derin şekilde his ettirdiği için. Kim bilir?

I'm definitely not the same person I used to be after reading this. I could write thousands of pages about how I felt after finishing this novella at the school. About how emptiness hit me, about how devastated I became as if I was the main character of the book myself... Ah Raif...
Sometimes the regrets about things we didn't do are even harsher than the regrets we did. And cowardice is the biggest contributor to this...
It might sound like I'm exaggerating it to you right now but there's something about this book that both healed me and ruined me at the same time. Maybe because I saw a piece of myself in it, maybe because it made me feel a deep emotion I've never experienced before. Who knows?

The novel follows Jay Gatsby, a wealthy man who throws lavish parties in hopes that his former lover, Daisy Buchanan, will come. Daisy had once loved Gatsby, but after losing contact with him during the war, she married Tom Buchanan. After five years, Gatsby reconnects with Daisy when Nick Carraway, their mutual friend and neighbor, invites her to tea at Gatsby’s request. Gatsby and Daisy resume their romance, though Daisy is unwilling to leave Tom completely. At the Plaza Hotel in New York, Tom and Gatsby argue bitterly, with Gatsby demanding that Daisy declare she never loved Tom. Daisy hesitates, and the confrontation ends in tension. On the drive back, Daisy—driving Gatsby’s car—accidentally strikes and kills Myrtle Wilson. Gatsby decides to take the blame. Shortly after, George Wilson, convinced Gatsby was responsible, shoots Gatsby while he is floating in his pool, and then kills himself. Daisy does not reach out or attend Gatsby’s funeral, leaving Nick to reflect on the emptiness behind wealth and the American Dream.
As the eldest daughter and a gifted child drifting between depression and grandiosity, this book helped me put names to some patterns I had been blindly following. Once you identify a problem and label it, you gain a clearer picture of what you are dealing with. The rest may not be a piece of cake, but resolving a defined and visible problem is far easier than fighting with shadows.
Unresolved childhood traumas run the world. They shape the core of our personalities, our survival mechanisms, and our reactions to life’s events. No one deserves to be hurt or wounded, but it is our responsibility to grow beyond our trauma and heal from it, because the cycle must be broken and not passed on to the next generation. Yes, it is deeply unfair to carry the burden of wounds we did not cause in the first place, but life has never promised us justice.
If you are the “gifted child” everyone assumes has a perfect life, so they leave you to your own fate, yet you still wonder, I have everything but why don’t I feel grateful? What is this emptiness? If you carry a constant guilt no matter how “perfect” you are, and if no achievement of yours has ever brought more than a fleeting sense of relief, this book may resonate deeply with you.

It would be totally unfair if I didn't have a single review about my #1 favourite book so far. It's been over a year since I've read it. And it's still fresh in my mind. After reading a quick summary I've decided to write a review about the book.
The Midnight Library is a matter of regrets. It's about making wrong decisions at the time. It's about being unsatisfied about life. It's about feeling unwanted. It's about: Could I make things turn out any better?
What is special about this book is that it came right when I needed it the most. I guess this is the factor that makes the book #1 for me. Unlike many other books, I never looked up for the page that I'm at. It just flowed through.
I believe that my feeling of emptiness was not special to me. Every person undergoes similar situations in their lives. But The Midnight Library may help people gain some aspect of their lives. To help them understand why the best life you could ever live in is the current life you are at.
In conclusion this book totally deserves to be chosen as the best book by Goodreads in 2020.
