This is a scary story. Well, not in the classical way you may think.
The elements are all there: a big house with just a few people in the middle of nowhere, ghosts and children that are probably possessed and are acting weird (well I guess, just regular children.) However the plot is very confusing.
The book is mainly written in the format of a diary of a woman. So a bunch of impressions. Nothing is clear and reading it feels like taking a walk in a fog. The line of real and imaginary is very much blurred. I've heard when talking to my friends about it that the book is very much allegorical and it can be understood understood in many different ways. This is very true.
In my experience, since I was away from home and reading this before sleep after a long day with hanging out with friends I could barely read a few pages before falling asleep - hence why it took me so long to finish it-. The book did not flow, sentences were long and there was like a barrier between the writer and the reader. And everything happened just there, in between the lines.
I started to appreciate the ornateness however, as it forced me to think harder and frankly, fall asleep faster.
I have to read some analysis on this.
