Nadine Gordimer, 20 Kasım 1923'te Güney Afrika'da, Johannesburg yakınlarında küçük bir madenci kasabasında dünyaya geldi. Anne ve babası Yahudi'ydi; kuyumculuk yapan babası Rusya'dan, annesi İngiltere'den göç etmişti. Aldığı manastır eğitiminden sonra Johannesburg'da Witwatersrand Üniversitesi'ni bitirdi. Nadine Gordimer, yazmaya dokuz yaşında başladı ve on beş yaşındayken yazdığı ilk kısa öyküsü Güney Afrika'da bir dergide basıldı. On yıl sonra 1949'da ilk öykü kitabı, Face to Face yayınlandı. İlk romanı The Lying Days, 1953 yılında çıktı. Afrika, Avrupa ve Kuzey Amerika'nın birçok yerini gezdi, ancak Johannesburg'da yaşamayı sürdürdü. Nadine Gordimer, bugüne kadar yazdığı on roman ve yedi öykü kitabının yanında edebiyat eleştirileri ve değişik konularda pek çok makale yazdı, konferanslar verdi. 1974 yılında The Conservationist adlı kitabıyla Booker Ödülü'nü, 1991 yılında da Nobel Edebiyat Ödülü'nü aldı.
