Coleman Barks Chattanooga, Tennessee’de doğdu ve büyüdü. Kuzey Carolina ve Berkeley üniversitelerinde eğitim aldı. Otuz yıl boyunca Georgia Üniversitesi’nde nesir ve şiir dersleri verdi. Son otuz yılını Sufizm ve Mevlânâ eğitimine adadı. Coleman Barks’ın çok sayıda Mevlânâ tercümesi yayımlandı ve sadece Amerika’da on milyonun üzerinde sattı. İnceleme ve şiir kitapları sekiz defa ulusal ve uluslararası ödüllere layık görüldü. Coleman Barks, halen Athens’da (Georgia) yaşamakta, Mevlânâ çalışmalarına devam etmektedir.
