Unfortunately, humans (as a whole—and, yes, I know I’m generalizing here) are not good at dealing with what they cannot categorize and contain in conceptual boxes, and they have difficulties accepting what is not “like them.”
Autism is found in consistent numbers throughout the human race and that it is a genetically mediated phenomenon, which means autistic people almost certainly have been around a very, very long time.

Even although autistic women (who once were girls) have been “out there” in full public view over the years, autism has long been thought of as a “male condition.” Autistic females have been invisible in terms of recognition, research, strategic planning, and service provision.

Is autism a disorder? It seems that in our society, in order to receive funding and a unique understanding about how one thinks, senses, perceives, and learns, one must be diagnosed with a disorder. As one little boy with Asperger syndrome once said to me, “But why is it called a disorder? There is nothing ‘disordered’ about me.” I entirely agree with him.
I didn’t have the maturity that most women of my age possessed. Being desperate to fit in, I would often take unnecessary risks.
The internet had become another of my addictions and I would spend pretty much day and night scouring the net for people to talk to and connect with, researching a multitude of topics that would take hold of my information-hungry mind.
