There are at least three different forms of empathy: the affective (to feel the emotions of others), the cognitive (to know how to describe these emotions), and the behavioral (to know what to do to help the person who is suffering).

Is autism a disorder? It seems that in our society, in order to receive funding and a unique understanding about how one thinks, senses, perceives, and learns, one must be diagnosed with a disorder. As one little boy with Asperger syndrome once said to me, “But why is it called a disorder? There is nothing ‘disordered’ about me.” I entirely agree with him.
Being able to relax on cue is often not available for girls on the spectrum. Often, by the time they realize they need to relax, their anxiety is off the chart and they are resistant to any assistance.
Unfortunately, humans (as a whole—and, yes, I know I’m generalizing here) are not good at dealing with what they cannot categorize and contain in conceptual boxes, and they have difficulties accepting what is not “like them.”

Some days I struggle to remember how to turn the shower on—the same shower I have been using for the past 13 years. When I cook, I have to lay out every ingredient and utensil in advance, and no one is allowed to speak to me.
