Being able to relax on cue is often not available for girls on the spectrum. Often, by the time they realize they need to relax, their anxiety is off the chart and they are resistant to any assistance.
Girls on the spectrum can rigidly avoid many experiences, depriving themselves of the learning that they can be active agents of change in their own lives.

Is autism a disorder? It seems that in our society, in order to receive funding and a unique understanding about how one thinks, senses, perceives, and learns, one must be diagnosed with a disorder. As one little boy with Asperger syndrome once said to me, “But why is it called a disorder? There is nothing ‘disordered’ about me.” I entirely agree with him.
