But the study that caused the greatest interest was one which investigated verbs, comparing brain activation for regular past tense formations (e.g. jumped) with irregular ones (e.g. sang). The researchers found that irregular past tenses elicited a significantly greater amount of brain activity than the regular past tenses. This finding was no surprise to linguists, who had long ago concluded that past tenses of regular verbs are formed by the application of rules, but that irregular past tenses involve lexical memory.
Increasingly, linguists are finding that syntax and semantics are intrinsically linked together, and cannot easily be separated. It is far easier to split off phonology. Syntax and semantics together form the essence of any language.

We lose sight of the need for explanation when phenomena are too familiar and ‘obvious’. We tend too easily to assume that explanations must be transparent and close to the surface. -Noam Chomsky
By innate, Chomsky simply means ‘genetically programmed’. He does not literally think that children are born with language in their heads ready to be spoken. He merely claims that a ‘blueprint’ is there, which is brought into use when the child reaches a certain point in her general development. With the help of this blueprint, she analyses the language she hears around her more readily than she would if she were totally unprepared for the strange gabbling sounds which emerge from human mouths.
On the one hand, human language may have gradually evolved from a more primitive animal means of communication in a continuous line of growth – a viewpoint sometimes known as a ‘continuity’ theory. On the other hand, human language may be something quite different from our basic animal heritage, and superimposed on it. This is a ‘discontinuity’ theory.
Arbitrariness means that human languages use neutral symbols. There is no connection between the word DOG and the four-legged animal it symbolizes. It can equally be called UN CHIEN (French), EIN HUND (German), or CANIS (Latin). Onomatopoeic words such as CUCKOO, POP, BANG, SLURP and SQUISH are exceptions to this. But there are relatively few of these in any language.
