Many political and social changes must occur before the image of the future can be built. Exhortation will not build it, but environment can be of some service there: present change can be made legible, past change can be explained (in place of the idyllic "once upon a time"), continuity with the near future can be displayed, conservation and adaptability can be internalized as present satisfactions, selfexperiments and "museums of the future" can develop the range of choices ahead. The spatial and temporal environment can be used to shape the attitudes toward the future that are themselves keys to changing the world.
