"Linger no more. It's annoying. You have decided to leave, just leave!" Because she was so proud, she did not want him to see her weeping.
They have Won
“We’re done being squashed by the House of Morgan and their goldsoaked nobles,” Brados says, “while we starve. We’re taking power for ourselves.” At my side, Malleus draws his sword. “Just try.” Talan raises his hand. “Enough. Put your sword away. You look like an idiot.” Malleus flushes and sheathes his sword. Talan meets Brados’s stare. “You’re right. This country shouldn’t be ruled by the House of Morgan. In fact, the House of Morgan has never ruled this kingdom.” Brados stares at him. “What the fuck are you talking about?” “Auberon lied. The throne was never his. Mordred is not his father. He descends from Merlin.” “Do we really need to worry about old history?” Aedan blusters. “It’s true,” I say. “Mordred, son of Morgan, is still alive on Avalon. I am his daughter. He told me this himself.” “You’re lying,” Brados says coldly. “Ask your advisor,” I say calmly. “She saw Mordred only yesterday. They got along very well, actually.” Brados turns to Nivene in shock. She purses her lips and gives him a tiny nod. “Well, then this makes it even clearer,” Brados says. “We’re not going to let Mordred, whom none of us has seen in over a millennium, rule over us. And we definitely won’t let a family of liars rule, either.” “Neither will we,” Aedan says, his oily voice sharp and dangerous. “Clearly, the strongest noble family should take charge. Farmers and peasants don’t know how to run a kingdom.” “The most powerful noble family?” Malleus raises his voice. “And who would that be? My father holds the largest army—” “Your father has the plague, boy,” Aedan spits. “He’s already getting better—”

It is Good To Be Rogue when there is An Assasion
“Your Highness,” one of them shouts. “Thank the gods you’re not hurt! There’s been some sort of attack. Magical explosives. Both your quarters and your father’s were the targets, apparently.” “What happened to the king?” Talan’s voice echoes off the walls. The guard shakes his head. “Luckily, he was in the library and not in his room.” “Any signs of the assassins?” “Already gone, Your Highness. We’re sending trackers to hunt them down.” “Find them alive. I want their confession. Because they didn’t just try to kill me. They tried to kill my wife, a mistake I will make them regret.” Nausea rises in my gut, and I lean against the wall, head pounding and my stomach twisted in knots. The assassins never needed me to open the window to let them in. The window was a signal that I was in the room with him. “Thank the gods you’re alive,” she murmurs, her voice tight. “Do you remember when you told me to have faith in Avalon Tower and not to worry about the details?” I hiss. “I’m not sure I trust your judgement at this point.” “Obviously, I didn’t think explosives would be involved,” she snaps. “The whole bloody point was for you to open the window for assassins to sneak inside.” “But what if there was a different reason they wanted me to open the window? To let them know I was with Talan? They blew the room up right after I opened the window. Within minutes. If they didn’t want me dead, surely they would have waited a while longer. They were supposed to strike when Talan was sleeping. They could see me in the window if they were looking.” Nivene shakes her head. “That couldn’t have been the instructions from

I think we’re all insecure and foolish in our own way. Some of us are like the First Disciple, always looking ahead. Others linger in the past like the Second Disciple. But for all of us, it’s easy to forget what’s important. I think the Time God assigns sleep time to the Third Disciple to help people. You know how yesterday’s worries are gone after a good night’s sleep, and we are fully refreshed to start a new day? That’s it!
A job to serve the king
When the door bangs open at dawn, I’m not frightened. Security searches are normal, though we usually only get one or two a year. This will be the third. “C’mon, Gee,” I mutter, helping her out of her cot and down the ladder. She moves precariously, leaning on her good arm, and Mom waits for us on the floor. Her arms close around Gisa, but her eyes are on me. To my surprise, she doesn’t look angry or even disappointed with me. Instead, her gaze is soft. Two officers wait by the door, their guns hanging by their sides. I recognize them from the village outpost, but there’s another figure, a young woman in red with a triple-colored crown badge over her heart. A royal servant, a Red who serves the king, I realize, and I begin to understand. This is not a usual search. “We submit to search and seizure,” my father grumbles, speaking the words he must every time this happens. But instead of splitting off to paw through our house, the Security officers stand firm. The young woman steps forward and, to my horror, addresses me. “Mare Barrow, you have been summoned to Summerton.” Gisa’s good hand closes around mine, like she can hold me back. “W-What?” I manage to stammer. “You have been summoned to Summerton,” she repeats, and gestures to the door. “We will escort you. Please proceed.” A summons. For a Red. Never in my life have I heard of such a thing. So why me? What have I done to deserve this? On second thought, I’m a criminal and probably considered a terrorist due to my association with Farley. My body prickles with nerves, every muscle taut and ready. I’ll have to run, even though the officers block the door. It’ll be a miracle if I make it to a window. “Calm down, everything’s settled after yesterday.” She chuckles, mistaking my fear. “The Hall and the market are well

This book, therefore, ends not with answers but with a wish. I want to love and be loved. I want to find a way where I don’t hurt myself. I want to live a life where I say things are good more than things are bad. I want to keep failing and discovering new and better directions. I want to enjoy the tides of feeling in me as the rhythms of life. I want to be the kind of person who can walk inside the vast darkness and find the one fragment of sunlight I can linger in for a long time. Some day, I will.
