The mission schools made no attempt to convert: that would have driven their pupils away. Indeed most of their students and 70 per cent of their teachers were non-Christians. Instead they inculcated the ideals of social service, the importance of extracurricular activity, the necessity of character-building and (in some cases) the virtues of manliness. The aim was transparent: if they could not preach Christianity, they would teach the Christian ethos. Its gradual penetration of the Indian elite – this was the hope – would dissolve the moral foundations of Hinduism and Islam and thus open the path for Christian conversion at the top, as well as the bottom, of Indian society.
