A debut novel about an accomplished woman who slowly loses her thoughts and memories to early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Genova's work with Alzheimer's patients has given her a deep understanding of the disorder and its impact not only on the afflicted, but on their friends and family as well. She does a remarkable job of sharing that perspective with her readers. Most of us have a sketchy familiarity with Alzheimer's and its primary symptom: a gradual loss of memory. Genova moves her readers beyond their superficial knowledge to a more profound grasp of the illness, illuminating consequences of it that most haven't considered (for example, the eventual loss of the ability to read a novel, as Alzheimer's patients lose the capacity to keep track of a plot line). The novel follows Alice Howland's life from her first suspicions of the illness through its conclusive diagnoses to how Alice and her family learn to cope as her condition worsens. Although the story's progression is somewhat predictable, the scenes Genova relates are generally unexpected. Like Alice, the reader never knows when the disease will impact a situation or simply lie dormant in the background. When Alice does exhibit symptoms, they seem to come when she, and the reader, least expect them. Genova also explores the difficult decisions faced by Alzheimer's patients and their families. She delves into such subjects as treatment options, care facilities, coping mechanisms, genetic implications, and even suicide. The text occasionally gets a bit wordy and artificial during some of these discussions, but for the most part they add to the sense of realism the novel projects. The book does lack a certain emotional depth. The narrator reports Alice's actions, but doesn't explore her feelings to any great

THE THEME OF MONEY AND SOCIAL NOBILITY IN MOLL FLANDERS

Moll Flanders tells the biography of a woman born in 18th century England from her own point of view. Born in a prison, a prostitute for twelve years, a thief for twelve years, married five times, her adventures taking her from England to America, Moll Flanders is one of the most interesting heroines in English literature with her controversial view of life and her in-depth portrait. Through Moll Flanders' life and philosophy, Daniel Defoe sharply criticises and debates 18th century England's accepted notions of human relationships, gender discrimination, social structure, morality, sexuality and crime. Since its publication in 1722, Moll Flanders has been the subject of much debate and discussion, both in terms of its subject matter and its narrative style. It is not Moll Flanders who is criticised, but society itself. The book is also significant as one of the first examples of the novel genre. When Defoe wrote Moll Flanders, women had limited freedom and choice. Because men were assumed to be better than women in everyday life, they ruled everything in this society. Upper-class women were expected to marry a socially superior man, keep a home and give birth. Less fortunate women generally had less options, being servants, mistresses, wives or criminals. Being a woman was quite a challenge, especially for lower class women. Moll suffers from poverty, class divisions, materialism, the oppression of women and capitalism as a member of the working class. These problems led her to start stealing and prostituting. The protagonist, Moll, was born in Newgate Prison when her mother was sent there for theft. After her mother was exiled to America, Moll wandered with gypsies for a few years. She was then taken in and cared for by an elderly nurse. Moll had a strong desire to

In this little book, Karl Popper worked out his earlier thoughts on the phenomenon of - what he called - historicism. This book was initially written in 1935 and revised multiple times before Popper published the final edition in 1957. In the meanwhile, Popper published his magnum opus, The Open Society and Its Enemies (1944), in which he describes the origins of the idea of historicist philosophy - he traces it back to Plato, and via Aristotle and Hegel to Marx. I had already read The Open Society and Its Enemies and was curious if The Poverty of Historicism had to offer any new insights. And I can recommend reading this prequel to The Open Society to anyone! Popper is one of the clearest philosophers ever - he has the amazing gift of explaining the most abstract and dry material (e.g. logic) in a clear and concise way. Compare this to such bombastic philosophers like Hegel, Nietzsche, and Kant and you will never want to read continental philosophers anymore! So what is this book exactly? The Poverty of Historicism is Popper's logical refutation of historicism. Historicism is the idea - very old, incidentally - that the philosopher can study history to find historical laws. By using these historical laws, the philosopher of history is able to not only understand the evolution of history but also - and more importantly - to make prophetical predictions about the future. This has to be clarified though since it is easy to misunderstand this position. The historicist claims that history evolves according to laws of progress; history knows different stages and each stage has its own guiding laws. The laws of one stage aren't applicable in the preceding or following historical periods. The historicist, living in a particular historical period, is, therefore, by

The fact that the author described our day so well and similarly in a book he wrote years ago is proof of how strong his foresight is. "While reading, "Oh that thing isn't it?" you pass between the lines. At the beginning of the book, “THIS BOOK IS NOT TOTAL IMAGINATION, IT IS PICTURE OF THE FUTURE! warning is written! Especially in recent years; We haven't seen or heard of the violence against women, animals and increasing child abuse, the tens of fires and floods, the economic hardships, and the people who tried to move the agenda in a different direction with meaningless memorized sentences. ; In the book, it is clear that the sheep go around saying "four legs are two, two legs are bad" and then "four legs are good, two legs are better" in moments of crisis. If George Orwell were alive, he would probably think that his book had been adapted to life or something. It gives such good lessons and slapstick answers to those who understand and actually want to understand that the book makes them say "wow, it couldn't have been explained so well". Books that should be used as textbooks in schools were among my options in my library. Not only do I recommend it, I encourage you to buy a gift and read it...!
