In one important respect Zwingli followed the Bible even more stringently than did Luther. The Wittenberger would allow whatever the Bible did not prohibit; Zwingli rejected whatever the Bible did not prescribe. For this reason the Reformation in Zurich tended to strip away more traditional symbols of the Roman church: candles, statues, organ and choir music, and pictures. Later, in England, this spirit was called Puritanism.
In England, King John differed with Innocent over the election of the archbishop of Canterbury, and Innocent placed England under interdict and excommunicated John. Under attack from his barons, John capitulated to Innocent by becoming his vassal, receiving England back as a fief, and paying him a sizable annual tribute.
In France, Innocent forced King Philip Augustus to comply with the church’s moral code by taking back as his queen the woman he had divorced with the consent of the French bishops.
And within the Holy Roman Empire (Germany), Innocent intervened in a civil war between rival candidates for the throne, supporting first one, then the other. In the end Innocent secured the election of his ward, the young Hohenstaufen heir Frederick II, who promised to respect papal rights and to go on a crusade.

Witches always hate people and yet resourceful little girls can win their grudging respect. Witches are always very clever and yet very stupid at the same time, each in very specific ways. They are always tricking people but they can always be tricked. They are fenced around with rules that don’t apply to normal people, but which they can’t break, and if you know the rules you can command them to do what you want, as well as use their great powers at your whim. That is how the stories go, although sometimes they use words other than “witch” for the thing the story is about, such as genie or demon or artificial intelligence.

We’ve left shore, somehow become the friends of early theory, close enough to speak of desire and pain of absence, of mistakes we’d make given the chance. Each smile returned makes harder avoiding dreams that see us lying in early evening curtain shadows, skin safe against skin. Bloom of compassion, respect for moments, eyes lock, turns forever into one more veil that falls away.
If changing somebody’s mind requires you to change who they think they are, then what you need is not rational arguments but ways to undermine your opponents’ sense of self or self-respect.
