Years ago, when I first spotted this book in a stationery shop, I decided to buy it without even flipping through its pages. On the cover, three men were being carried by the river's current toward an unknown destination. The title revealed little more than the image itself: Three Men in a Boat. Where they were going and why remained hidden between the pages. For some reason, I never got around to reading it. The book sat forgotten on a shelf for years, quietly waiting for me. Then one day I picked it up and finally began. Soon, I discovered why these three men had embarked on such a sudden and peculiar boating trip. Tired of their daily routines and convinced that they were suffering from all sorts of illnesses, they believe an adventure will do them good. Instead, the following two weeks prove far more challenging than expected. They can never quite agree on what should be done or how it should be done. They blame one another, make a mess of simple tasks, and seem incapable of catching a break. Jerome narrates all of this with an exaggerated sense of humor and remarkable wit. In the end, the three companions more or less accomplish what they set out to do. By the time they return to dry land, they are rather proud of themselves. But perhaps this book was written not only to amuse, but also to make us reflect. As we accompany these three friends like an invisible fourth passenger, we spend much of the journey wanting to step in and sort things out for them. And yet, when things go wrong in our own lives, what exactly do we do?

Bunun üzerine bir araştırma yapmak istedim ve Bir Alman psikolog olan Ludwig Janus ile tanıştım, "Vladimir Putin as a Return of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: A Psychohistorical Exploration of the Nature of Human Contradictoriness" adlı bir makale yayınlamış. Psikotarih uzmanı Ludwig Janus tarafından yazılan bu makale, Rusya lideri Vladimir Putin'in kişiliğini edebiyat dünyasının ünlü kurgusal karakterleri "Dr. Jekyll ve Mr. Hyde" ile karşılaştırarak inceliyor. Makale İngilizce fakat isteyen olursa Türkçe açıklamalarını biografimdeki linkten görebilirsiniz.

So refreshing to read a piece of literature that has shaped me into the person I am and also impacted my in every way possible. The dead poets have been a part of me for so long, and coming back to them connects me back to my roots again. I feel at home again, where the home is a cave. Dear Dead Poets, you will never not have a special place in my heart. I will always return to the place I belong, to the little cave where 7 young poets dreamt the wildest of dreams and became anything they wanted to be.

My journey with this story began unexpectedly when I saw a vintage GIF of a young woman reading on a train. That aesthetic curiosity led me to the 1945 film and, eventually, this captivating novel. What struck me most was the circular narrative structure; beginning and ending with Richard Harland’s return, it creates a sense of inevitability. While many focus on Ellen’s "monstrous" nature, I found the supporting characters equally unsettling. The "pure" characters—the Mother, Ruth, and Richard—were far from innocent. There was a subtle, pervasive gaslighting at play, particularly from Ellen's mother, which added layers of psychological complexity to the tragedy. Richard often acted as a passive participant in his own life, behaving as though the marriage was something forced upon him, even though Ellen’s obsession was clear from the start. The presence of Danny served as a pivotal trial for everyone involved, pushing Ellen’s jealousy toward a point of no return. Though Ellen committed truly heinous acts, the book succeeds because it shows a "Mastermind" created by an environment of emotional neglect and obsession. The finale was haunting and perfectly executed—a dark masterpiece of Technicolor Noir.
