Choo Nam-joo’s novel Palsip Yi Nyeon Saeng Kim Jiyeong (better known in English as Kim Ji-young, Born 1982) is a deceptively simple yet profoundly impactful book. At first glance, it tells the life story of an ordinary Korean woman, Kim Jiyeong, tracing her experiences from childhood through adulthood. But as the narrative unfurls, it becomes clear that Ji-young’s life is far from “ordinary." It is a case study in the cumulative effects of everyday gender inequality. The writing style is clear and direct, almost documentary-like, often presenting events with a clinical objectivity that makes the reader all the more aware of how “normal” discrimination can feel. We see Jiyeong repeatedly sidelined: in school when boys are prioritized and her concerns are dismissed; in the workplace through unequal pay, limited promotion opportunities, and subtle harassment; and later in domestic life where she is expected to sacrifice her career to become a full-time caregiver. These experiences are not presented as rare injustices, but as the everyday reality for many women, which is precisely the point. One striking aspect of the novel is how it blends fictional life moments with real statistics and social commentary, sometimes through footnotes or contextual details that extend beyond Jiyeong’s personal story. This approach underlines how pervasive and normalized gender bias is. It’s not just one woman’s tragedy but a representation of structural inequality. What makes the novel especially powerful is that it builds to something deeper than a recounting of wrongs: it reveals how systemic patriarchy distorts identity and self-worth. Jiyeong’s mental health deteriorates under the weight of internalized misogyny, cultural expectations, and relentless inequity, reminding the reader

John Strelecky’s The Why Café is a quiet, almost magical little story that lifts the reader out of everyday chaos and drops them into a lonely café in the middle of nowhere. The main character, John, arrives exhausted and directionless, and the café’s strange menu questions—“Why are you here?”, “Do you fear death?”, “Are you fulfilled?”—start pulling him into a kind of inner conversation he has avoided for years. The book isn’t driven by dramatic events; instead, the people he meets there—Casey, Mike, Anne—act like mirrors, reflecting back the parts of himself he hasn’t looked at closely. As he talks with them, the reader naturally drifts into the same introspection, wondering, Am I actually living with purpose? Or just moving through routine? The writing is simple and calm, and the impact comes from this gentleness: it doesn’t lecture, but it nudges. At times, it can feel idealistic, simplifying the messiness of real life, yet that simplicity is also what makes it comforting. In the end, The Why Café feels less like a novel and more like a quiet pause—a small, warm reminder to step back and reconsider what we’re doing with our days, and why.

Best book on Parkinson's Disease I have read so far - mainly because it is written by a journalist instead of doctors! If you are new to Parkinson’s, this is not going to give you the details on what the disease is or does that you’re looking for. But if you are familiar with Parkinson’s, this is a fascinating history and look-forward of the disease. Award-winning journalist Palfreman’s fast-paced, captivating, and crisp narrative of patients, doctors, and researchers is part scientific investigation, part medical detective story, and part memoir, and it opens wide a window into the world of Parkinson’s. He introduces readers to James Parkinson, who in 1817 offered the first clinical description of the disease; Jean-Martin Charcot, who accurately described the signs and symptoms of what appeared to be a movement disorder; Constantin Tretiakoff, who demonstrated that the disease was caused by damage to the substantia nigra portion of the brain; and Frederick Lewy, who discovered the pathological hallmarks of Parkinson’s. Palfreman, who was diagnosed with the disease during his research, investigates drug therapies, such as the routine L-dopa therapy initiated in the 1960s and still used frequently today, and experimental drugs such as NPT088, which has yet to be approved by the FDA. There are more than seven million Parkinson’s sufferers worldwide and Palfreman shares some of their stories, including that of dancer Pam Quinn, who has learned to “trick” her symptoms and teaches her methods to other Parkinson’s patients. He reminds readers that a diagnosis of Parkinson’s is a life sentence, but Palfreman remains optimistic about what new discoveries may be able to offer Parkinson’s patients. This book is AMAZING for patients with Parkinson's and for their close ones.

I don’t usually like stretching out books over long periods, but this one is definitely meant to be read slowly—taking time to reflect, absorb its ideas, and integrate them into daily life. This approach allows the book’s core message to sink in more effectively. It’s especially beneficial for multi-faceted individuals looking to bring structure to their busy lives. On a personal note, I already had a work rhythm and routine before reading this book, but now I’ve developed a more sustainable and balanced approach.

Charles Duhigg’s The Power of Habit is an insightful and well-researched exploration of how habits shape our lives, businesses, and societies. The book delves into the science behind habit formation, explaining how behaviors become automatic through the "cue-routine-reward" loop.Duhigg supports his arguments with compelling real-world examples, ranging from corporate strategies at Starbucks and Alcoa to the way Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps trained his mind. One of the book’s greatest strengths is its ability to blend scientific research with engaging storytelling.Duhigg presents complex psychological and neurological concepts in a way that is both accessible and practical. He not only explains how habits work but also offers strategies for changing them, making the book highly relevant for personal development, productivity, and leadership. However, some readers may find that the book leans more towards storytelling than in-depth scientific analysis. While the anecdotes are fascinating, those looking for a more detailed discussion of neuroscience might find the explanations somewhat simplified. Overall, The Power of Habit is an inspiring and thought-provoking read.It is particularly valuable for anyone looking to break bad habits, build positive ones or understand the mechanisms behind behavior change. Whether you’re an individual looking for self-improvement or a leader aiming to transform an organization, this book provides powerful insights into why we do what we do—and how we can do better. It is an excellent read for anyone interested in self-improvement,business or psychology. While people could benefit from more structured guidance, its engaging narratives and real-world applications make it a highly valuable resource. In essence, it’s a must-read for anyone looking to

The book, which is almost the most trending nowadays by Kafka, was first published in 1915. The story of the book, trying to convey a social and philosophical message, begins with a situation where Gregor Samsa wakes up to a beautiful day. At first, everything seems regular. But suddenly, he finds himself transformed into a big bug. Then, the realization is an inception to Gregor's new life, which will not continue with his standard routine of getting up and going to his boring job. The Metamorphosis is successful in giving diverse messages. However, this book made me consider reincarnation. What would happen if we changed our body but kept the same soul, or changed our soul but kept the same body? continuation of the book summary: pollsdergi.wordpress.com/2024/07/17/the-...
