I read Empire of Flame and Thorns in English, so it felt only natural to share my thoughts in the same language. Writing this review in English just feels more honest and connected to the reading experience. ( Spoiler Alert!)
So ,fantasy has always been a genre that captures my interest especially when it includes an “enemies to lovers” dynamic. I can never pass up a story like that. Empire of Flame and Thorns caught my attention for that very reason. But as I turned the pages, I realized this book was not just about romance or the usual magic tropes it was much more than that.
The main character, Selena, doesn’t fit the typical “most powerful female lead” mold. She does have powers, but they’re limited. Especially in the earlier chapters, she sometimes fades into the background compared to the other characters. And that actually makes her feel more realistic and relatable. One thing that stood out to me from the beginning was that she never tried to use her power to manipulate others she just wants people to love her. That alone set her apart from many other “perfect” heroines. Selena feels more sincere, more human and that’s exactly why I found her so compelling.
Selena is forced to take part in a deadly competition filled with incredibly powerful opponents. At this point, the strongest Dragon Shifter, Darven, tries to stop her from joining the contest. At first, I thought he was doing it either because he was authoritarian or still holding a grudge over the drink incident. But as the story progressed, a different reason slowly became clear: Darven was afraid something terrible would happen to Selena. This was my first biographical book. I've never read any biography before. Everything in this book was so raw that it sometimes brought tears to my eyes. The loneliness, being an only Asian-American at school, the cultural differences between her mother and father, every emotion, every grief, every chapter, everything... I felt every one of them to my bones.

These are some of the many real-world examples of “noise” that are mentioned in Noise: A Flaw in Human Judgment by renowned psychologist and winner of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences Daniel Kahneman. Noise is the follow-up to his previous book Thinking, Fast and Slow, released in 2011, which brought attention to his work on how cognitive biases shape judgment. In Noise, Kahneman and his co-authors, Oliver Sibony and Cass R. Sunstein, explore the other type of error impacting our judgments: noise.
The book follows the premise that “wherever there is judgment, there is noise – and more of it than you think”. If noise is so prevalent, why is it not widely spoken about? Kahneman notes that noise can only be identified in statistics, making it more difficult to track, which means it tends to go unnoticed and unmentioned.
Noise is broken up into six parts. It begins with the difference between noise (random scatter) and bias (systematic deviations), the nature of human judgment and how to measure accuracy and error. It also goes into predictive judgment, human psychology and the causes of noise, how to improve judgments and prevent error, and what is the right level of noise.
Who knew that important decisions could be swayed by seemingly redundant factors? Such as who spoke first in the meeting, what day of the week it is or whether the local football team won last night’s match.
