Suffering is not necessary to find meaning, only that meaning is possible in spite of suffering.
To achieve personal meaning, one must transcend subjective pleasures by doing something that points, and is directed, to something, or someone, other than oneself… by giving himself to a cause to serve or another person to love.
It is we ourselves who must answer the questions that life asks of us, and to these questions we can respond only by being responsible for our existence.
Today’s society is characterized by achievement orientation, and consequently it adores people who are successful and happy and, in particular, it adores the young. It virtually ignores the value of all those who are otherwise, and in so doing blurs the decisive difference between being valuable in the sense of dignity and being valuable in the sense of usefulness.
