Leonardo da Vinci 's surviving notebooks, there are more than 35,000 words and over 500 sketches that deal with the nature of flight and with flying machines. Many aspects of his approach to reality go into these studies: his penetrating observation of nature, his love of theoretical knowledge and, above all, of mechanics, which he termed "the paradise of the mechanical sciences because by means of it one comes to the fruit of mathematics"; his sense for the empirical testing of theory through experimentation; his creative fantasy as an artist. The studies also reveal his emotional obsession with the idea of freedom and escape."
