The first to accept repentant sinners as a matter of policy was the bishop of Rome. Callistus (217–22) readmitted penitent members who had committed adultery and abortion and other sins. He argued that the church is like Noah’s ark. In it unclean as well as clean beasts can be found. Then he defended his actions by insisting that the Church of Rome was the heir of Peter, and the Lord had given keys to Peter to bind and to loose sins. This marks the first time a bishop of Rome claimed this special authority.

The marriage Nicholas had made between the papacy and Renaissance art and learning endured. It survived his immediate successor, the elderly Spaniard Callistus III (1455–8), whose main preoccupation was the recovery of Constantinople from the Turks, and for whom everything else was a waste of money. Callistus called a halt to all Nicholas’ building projects, and is reported to have cried out on walking into his predecessor’s library, ‘See how the treasure of the Church has been wasted.’ He is said to have sold the precious bindings from Nicholas’ books to finance the fleet he built against the Turks.
