What kind of cultures, societies and political structures would have emerged in a world where several different human species coexisted? How, for example, would religious faiths have unfolded? Would the book of Genesis have declared that Neanderthals descend from Adam and Eve, would Jesus have died for the sins of the Denisovans, and would the Qur’an have reserved seats in heaven for all righteous humans, whatever their species? Would Neanderthals have been able to serve in the Roman legions, or in the sprawling bureaucracy of imperial China? Would the American Declaration of Independence hold as a self-evident truth that all members of the genus Homo are created equal? Would Karl Marx have urged workers of all species to unite?”

Kitap, meslektaşını öldüren Profesör Darrell Standing'in hapishanede yaşadıklarını ve zihinsel gücünü kullanarak geçmiş yaşamlarına yaptığı yolculukları konu alıyor.
Yıldız Gezgini, reenkarnasyon ve astral seyahatle ilgili etkileyici bir tema içerse de romanı çok fazla beğenemedim. Darrel Standing'in farklı yaşamlarda zaman ve mekanlardaki heyecan verici maceralarıyla, 'gömlek' içindeki zamanının yan yana gelmesi fikri bence okuyucuyu etkileyen asıl şey oluyor.
Standing’in hapishanede tanıdığı mahkumlarla ilgili daha çok detay beklerdim. Oppenheimer ve Morrell dışında gerçek, unutulmaz karakterler yerine sadece yüzsüz, duygusuz isimler var. Jack London sadece gömleğin ayrıntılarını tarif etmekle sabır ve dayanıklılık temasını defalarca tekrar ediyormuş gibi gözüküyor.
Romanın sonu garip bir şekilde kadın hakkında tuhaf bir monoloğa dönüşüyor ve ardından ruhun sürekli akış halinde olduğuna dair şeyler anlatılıyor. Bu monologlar, romanın bütünüyle tutarsız olsalar da, kitapta okumaktan en çok keyif aldığım hikayeler arasında net bir bağlantısının olmasını isterdim.
Kitaptan büyük bir beklentim vardı. Yazarın okuduğum ilk kitabı olması ve beklentimi karşılamaması kötü oldu. Karakterlerle bağlanamadım, kendimi olaylar içinde bulamadım. Konunun farklı olmasını ve yazarın anlatımını beğendim. Bu yüzden herkesin söz ettiği, yazarın diğer bir kitabı olan 
Martin Eden’ı okumayı düşünüyorum.
