Another form of Christianity that resonates in the Global South and is therefore growing in places like Africa is prosperity churches. Preachers of the prosperity gospel are so called because they teach that material wealth and physical health are signs of God’s spiritual blessing and that poverty and disease are evidence of sin or lack of faith. At the extreme, preachers suggest that one can demonstrate faith and unlock the blessings of heaven by tithing or giving to the church, sowing a seed to reap a financial harvest or healing. Many evangelical Christians consider prosperity preaching dangerous, self-serving, and a threat to true Christianity.
Protestantism also spread in Korea. In 1960 one in twenty Koreans identified as Protestant. By 2010 that number was one in four. In 2020 Korea was home to five of the world’s largest churches, the largest of which, Yoido Full Gospel Church, began in 1961 and was believed to have 800,000 members in 2018.

The prime example of sin in society, according to the preachers of the social gospel, was the capitalist system and what the profit motive did to create inhumane conditions for laborers. Man’s salvation, they said, was impossible as long as that system remained unchanged. Social Gospelers differed among themselves over how much change was necessary for the regeneration of the American system, but they agreed the kingdom of God could not come without it.
Many Christians in the nineteenth century followed Jonathan Edwards in the belief that the knowledge of the Lord would fill the earth as the waters cover the sea, and this spread of the gospel was preparation for the coming reign of Christ upon the earth. This belief in a future reign of Christ was called millennialism.
