The novella centers on Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman who has gone eighty-four days without catching a fish. In his village, he is seen as unlucky, even defeated. Only a young boy, Manolin, continues to believe in him, although he is no longer allowed to fish with Santiago. This quiet isolation shapes the emotional atmosphere of the story. Santiago is not just physically alone at sea; he is also set apart from the people around him, living on the edge of relevance.
When he finally sets out far into the Gulf Stream, determined to break his unlucky streak, he hooks a giant marlin. What follows is a long, exhausting struggle that lasts for days. The fish pulls his small boat deep into the open sea, and Santiago, despite his age and pain, refuses to give up. What is striking here is not just the physical challenge, but the way Santiago thinks about the fish. He does not hate it. He respects it, admires it, even feels a kind of kinship with it. At times, he speaks to it as if it were an equal. This changes the nature of the conflict. It is not a simple battle between man and nature, but something more complex, almost like a test of worth between two noble beings.
When Santiago finally kills the marlin, it feels like a moment of triumph, but that triumph does not last. Sharks are drawn to the blood of the fish and begin to attack it.

mangaları okurken duyguyu tam hissedemediğimi fark ettirdi biraz. kısa olduğundan mı, bazı yerlerde hiç olay olmadığından mı yoksa sonlara doğru bir olayı iki farklı şekilde gördüğümüz için mi; bilmiyorum ama bir kafa karışıklığı yarattı. umarım filmi mangasını daha iyi anlamama yardım eder.

zeynep has been someone i wanna hug tightly from beginning to end. our fears, our outlook on life..so similar. her tendency to see people in black and white, her avoidance of rainbow colors, all stemming from a fear of being hurt and broken. the more she gets close to people, the more she fears being hurt. and love, especially. her cry of “i won’t get married” as a form of resistance against societal pressure and the list of responsibilities imposed on women - it’s her way of fighting. i truly wanted to embrace her.

Imagine a long conversation with a man who keeps you engrossed from the first word – that’s pretty much what this book is. That is both good and bad, frankly. The very conversational tone of this book can get annoying – at times I felt that I was being examined on the points – but the overwhelming effect of this book is that you are fascinated and enthralled, both by Dr Patten’s insights and courage and by the courage and resilience of his patients. That he comes from an age of medicine where the patient, rather than the cost, matters is evident from the start, and that he cares deeply is equally evident. I felt privileged to read his “adventures.”
Neurology Rounds with the Maverick is one of the most informative and entertaining neurology books. Within these real life medical stories is a lot of personal wisdom and insight about how the way we treat sick people has changed. Some of them are mundane, yet still humorous to hear in Dr. Patten’s unique way of speaking. Some are genuine medical mysteries that would be difficult to diagnose even now, let alone in the “golden age of medicine” when Patten practiced. Prepare to be fascinated by all the ways brain damage and other neurological illness can affect human life, and take a look back at a simpler time in medicine.
The tone of this excellent book is set by the author in a ‘general conversation with the reader’ – "I know I am from a bygone era, an era when life was quite different, an era that included what is now considered by doctors as the golden age of medicine. It was an interesting time for doctors because there were few administrators, the insurance companies did not interfere with medical practice, and, believe it or not, money was not a big issue.
