This relatively short book is about an exceptional man with an extraordinary memory capacity. The author introduced him as "a Jewish boy who, having failed as a musician and as a journalist, had become a mnemonist". Whilst the focus of the book is the subject’s "vast memory", what the author eventually depicts is a man whose total personality is truly unique and complex. What emerges is a picture of a strange man with very great expectations but unfulfilled ambitions, whose inexhaustible memory capacity is matched only by his enigmatic nature. Quite fascinating is the author’s forensic and painstaking unraveling of the underlying mechanism behind this man’s phenomenal memory and unusual character (page 4). The book’s comprehensive approach was guided by the author’s precept that ‘the thoughtful physician is never interested merely in the course of a disease he happens to be studying at the moment, but tries to determine what effect a disturbance has on other organic processes…thus giving rise to the total picture of disease (pages 4-5). He exemplified this precept throughout the book, urging others to follow his example and study other psychological syndromes such as this (page 5). The author, a psychologist and neurologist, studied the protagonist, now known as Solomon Shereshevsky, for almost thirty years, starting in the 1920’s. His approach was methodical, typified by a keen attention to detail, and carried out over a long period of time. What he unearthed was a rare and exceptional man whose memory he described as ‘one of the keenest the literature on the subject has ever described’ (page 3). It didn’t take much testing for the author to realise that "it was impossible to establish a point of limit to the capacity or the duration of his memory" because he had the

I read Empire of Flame and Thorns in English, so it felt only natural to share my thoughts in the same language. Writing this review in English just feels more honest and connected to the reading experience. ( Spoiler Alert!) So ,fantasy has always been a genre that captures my interest especially when it includes an “enemies to lovers” dynamic. I can never pass up a story like that. Empire of Flame and Thorns caught my attention for that very reason. But as I turned the pages, I realized this book was not just about romance or the usual magic tropes it was much more than that. The main character, Selena, doesn’t fit the typical “most powerful female lead” mold. She does have powers, but they’re limited. Especially in the earlier chapters, she sometimes fades into the background compared to the other characters. And that actually makes her feel more realistic and relatable. One thing that stood out to me from the beginning was that she never tried to use her power to manipulate others she just wants people to love her. That alone set her apart from many other “perfect” heroines. Selena feels more sincere, more human and that’s exactly why I found her so compelling. Selena is forced to take part in a deadly competition filled with incredibly powerful opponents. At this point, the strongest Dragon Shifter, Darven, tries to stop her from joining the contest. At first, I thought he was doing it either because he was authoritarian or still holding a grudge over the drink incident. But as the story progressed, a different reason slowly became clear: Darven was afraid something terrible would happen to Selena. As the competition went on, the gray areas between the characters became increasingly obvious. For example, Alistair, who first appeared harsh and threatening, clearly

Hello everyone, This is my second book review, and today I want to talk about Visions of Cody by Jack Kerouac. He is a well-known writer, but not very popular in Turkey. If you want to read this book, I recommend starting with On the Road first. I can say that Visions of Cody is a deeper and more detailed version of On the Road. Before you start reading, you should know that the book contains a lot of drug use, sex, alcohol, and the wild lifestyle of the Beat Generation. As it says on the back cover: “You will find some of Kerouac’s very best writing in this book. It is funny, it is serious. It is eloquent.” However, Visions of Cody is not an easy or fast read. It is written in an experimental, stream-of-consciousness style, making it more chaotic and fragmented than On the Road. If you are looking for a simple, straightforward story, this book might be challenging. But if you are a fan of Kerouac and enjoy unique writing styles, you may find it fascinating.

looking through woman's eyes

'I appealed to one who, in the discharge of what he believed his duty, knew neither mercy nor remorse. He continued: 'God and nature intended you for a missionary's wife. It is not personal, but mental endowments they have given you: you are formed for labour, not for love.(as Romney in Aurora Leigh) A missionary's wife you must—shall be. You shall be mine: I claim you—not for my pleasure, but for my Sovereign's service.' As an unusual perspective in Victorian Era, Writer here explains what was the basic expectations of man from marriage. Here as a missionaire, he wanted from Jane to being as a devouted wife but we see how she rejects this idea of "love and marriage." In paranthesis i gave another example from another rebellious work Aurora Leigh. Both reflects the same characteristic in terms of challenging this idea of marriage. That was unusual because patriarch was reigning the society and explaining what they feel so freely was unusual as Jane's reply to proposal above; criticising the concept of woman also. 'I scorn your idea of love,' I could not help saying, as I rose up and stood before him, leaning my back against the rock, i scorn the coun terfeit sentiment you offer: yes, St. John, and I scorn you when you offer it.'

Set during the Klondike Gold Rush, like several of Jack London’s stories including probably his two most famous; Call of the Wild and White Fang, The Odyssey of the North tells the tale of a Native retrieving his wife back from being stolen. The story was more than likely marketed as an adventure tale but like all of London’s work, if one only digs a bit deeper many other themes are present beyond that of simple entertainment. I would not classify this work as an entertainment or an adventure story simply because the action is all but limited and the brunt of the story is a long winded meandering dialog. Jack London was a known socialist and sympathetic to Natives and understood imperialism and colonialism (although opposing imperialism and colonialism certainly does not make a person a socialist). Many of his stories speak of the plight of natives because of colonial actions and the Klondike Gold Rush was an apparent display of imperialism for the sake of riches. He wrote “adventure” stories but those where only the backdrop to his tales that held much deeper meanings. More so than the adventure label London should be praised for his ability to describe and create an atmosphere. Reading London I could feel the cold of the Alaskan landscape and the desolation of limitless snow. His descriptions of his characters are top notch as well. Describing a large white man known as Alex Gunderson London say’s “a man such as the gods have almost forgotten how to fashion,” referring to his large and imposing status. He goes on to describe Gunderson as being crafted when the world was young and gods walked the earth, referencing mythology. The aspect of the story I found most interesting was the Stockholm Syndrome description of Naas’ wife not wanting to come back to him and
