Having to record, in ink, on paper, that you procrastinated over a task for no good reason is a powerful blow to your ego. It might be easy to tell yourself a few weak excuses for putting off a tedious assignment, but when you have to record these same excuses on paper their foolishness is exposed.

Growing an idea into a marketable company requires enormous mental and physical energy, and a focused commitment of personal time and resources that you cannot allow to be sidetracked by conflicting personalities. Your key personnel simply must have the interpersonal chemistry to get along. If not, their ego and personal agendas will divert the energies you need of them toward widening the chasm between them. (…) At the same time, beware of staffing your organization with people just because you like them or they get along with one another. You're not putting together a social club, and a team of dim bulbs, no matter how compatible and congenial, will never accomplish anything.
But while we are asleep the ego is not working, it has no conscious control over the messages we send to ourselves about our sense of worth. Our deeper experience may have on record that we really feel worthless, helpless, dependent, mediocre, inadequate, finite: this is our unconscious speaking, and when the ego cannot oppose any positive images to counteract these negative ones, we have the nightmare, the terrible revelation of our basic uselessness.
Speech, then, is everything that we call specifically human, precisely because without speech there can be no true ego. Every known language has the pronouns “I,” “thou,” and “he,” or verb forms which convey these reference points. And this is forced logic because, as we said, without the personal pronoun there would be no true ego and hence no human group with language.
