meaning making system after disasters
Certain core beliefs ground and orient people, providing asense of reality, meaning, or purpose to life. Assumptions may be that others can betrusted; that communities are safe; that there is a predictable future; that childrenoutlive their elders; that God is just. When such assumptions are shattered by a sud-den, unexpected catastrophic event, there is a deep need to restore order, meaning, and purpose. Meaning reconstruction in response to trauma and loss is a central pro-cess in healing (Neimeyer, 2001). It can reflect a new kind of wisdom born of expe-rience and a testament to survivors’ strengths. In recovery work, we may need to helppeople reconstruct a new sense of normality, identity, and relatedness to adapt to al-tered conditions. We cannot make meaning for them; our task is to support their ef-forts in finding their own meaning out of their experience (Frankl, 1946/1984) (PDF) Traumatic Loss and Major Disasters: Strengthening Family and Community Resilience. Birlikte geçirilen bir felaket kadar insanları birbirine bağlayan hiçbir şey yoktur. Ivo Andrić, Drinos tiltas. Times of great tragedy can bring out the best in the human spirit:ordinary people show extraordinary courage, compassion, and generosity in helpingkin, neighbors, and strangers to recover and rebuild lives (PDF) Traumatic Loss and Major Disasters: Strengthening Family and Community Resilience. Moreover, many of the processes associated with resilience (like a close relationship or community support) are not “in” the person. The notion of resilience as a trait also carries a high risk of blaming the victim when an individual does not manifest resilience in a difficult situation. As Garbarino remarked, following decades of research with high risk inner city youth: “Being unable to protect oneself against the accumulation of risk factors does not constitute moral turpitude. Some environments are too much for anyone” (2005, p. xiii) Wright, M. O., & Masten, A. S. (2015). Pathways to resilience in context. In L. C. Theron, L. Liebenberg, & M. Ungar (Eds.), Youth resilience and culture: Commonalities and complexities (pp. 3–22). Springer Science + Business Media. doi.org/10.1007/978-94-...
