I have just finished the book Normal People by Sally Rooney. Overall, to me, it seemed like a normal book: an enjoyable drama, thrilling and addictive. However, there was still a question: what was I reading about? I think this happened because I had high expectations. But who set them? I think it was because it was everywhere, I mean so many people recommended this book. Even when I opened the front page, famous people's quotes were there, and it was awarded so many times. But to me, it still does not make any sense why it got so many awards. Who decided that this book is actually "good"? What is even a good or bad book? It is up to people’s preference, no? So, I think to me this was just an average drama. But what makes this book good to me are the two perfect characters, two normal people. Also, as a side note, maybe the reason I thought this was just an average book is its topic. It was literally about two normal, ordinary people, people we can see at university. There was nothing extraordinary, fancy, or miraculous. Reviewing the two main characters is a good beginning. I would like to start with Marianne. While I was reading about Marianne, the one thing I agreed with once more is that we accept the love we think we deserve; we accept the behavior we think we deserve. That is why it’s important to have self-love and self-respect. Because if you don't love yourself or respect yourself, you will accept disrespect from others as well. Deep inside, you think you deserve it and feel no need to fight it. She had literally no value towards herself. I believe there are many people like this, but for her, it was at the lowest point. Connell is a typical person who lives for the acceptance of society. He was so afraid of loneliness that he agreed to fit in anywhere he

I read this book almost to the end, but unfortunately it wasn’t my kind. The constant repetition of low self-esteem, self-doubt, and similar thoughts started to feel monotonous rather than deep for me. While I understand that this reflects the author’s real struggles, I personally couldn’t connect with the narrative. Because of that, I would give this book a lower rating. Still, hearing that the author passed away recently made me read it with more empathy and respect.

"The First Doctor became suddenly serious, stood straighter, seemed to be looking at him now with a new respect. 'So that's what it means,' he said, 'to be a Doctor of War.' And he smiled in appreciation of what his future self was capable of. It was a generous interprettion. But wasn't today about generous interpretations? The Doctor smiled at his old self. 'You were right, you know. The universe generally fails to be a fairy tale.' He put an arm around the oldy boy, and pleasingly, he accepted it. 'But that's where we come in."

THE SATIRIC FEATURES OF ALEXANDER POPE'S POEM THE RAPE OF LOCK

2023 9. kitabı
Alexander Pope's poem The Rape of the Lock is a critique of the idiosyncrasies and foibles of English aristocratic society. Pope uses wit, sarcasm and irony to convey his moral message. Pope depicts the false tone of the time and the frivolity of women, whilst acting sympathetically as the voice of his generation. The play is a social satire in that it pokes fun at society in a way that can still be applied in the modern day. The satire is not aimed at one individual, but at the faults and vanities of fashionable men and women at large. Pope's poem The Rape of the Lock was based on a real-life incident between two people, told to him by his friend John Caryll. The Baron was the suitor of Arabella Fermor, Lord Petre, and Belinda was her. Arabella was furious, and the two families began to denigrate and ignore each other, until Pope wrote the poem to make light of the tragedy and to bring them back together again. Pope's memory of the joyful conclusion of the poem evolves with the times. Pope immediately wrote the first draft of the poem, which he then shared with the family for some time. This version was published unnamed in 1712 and was much briefer than the most commonly read version. Things got more difficult at this point. The sensual implications and multiple meanings of Pope's poem became more apparent as more people read the printed version, and Arabella Fermor was mortified when her friends began to point out the crude humour. The real Sir Plume of the poem, Sir Charles Brown, took offence at being called a fool. Pope transformed the basic story into a fantastical setting by including sylphs and nymphs. In order to appease Arabella Fermor, Pope wrote a dedication to the poem. Poem became a success and has been the subject of praise, criticism and debate ever

This superb novel by Bronte, literally enchanted me for a while even though I've finished. The way somebody's emotions transferred me directly is the writer's magic. Also, I really enjoyed the references to Shakespeare, Greek mythology and other English novels. Besides, I liked the kind-of-gothic atmosphere of the book. The gloomy imagery fits the fiction. My favourite quotes from the book: “Do you think I am an automaton?–a machine without feelings? and can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living water dashed from my cup? Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!–I have as much soul as you,–and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh;–it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God’s feet, equal,–as we are!” “Every atom of your flesh is as dear to me as my own: in pain and sickness it would still be dear. Your mind is my treasure, and if it were broken, it would be my treasure still.” –Mr. Rochester “I can live alone if self-respect and circumstances require me so to do. I need not sell my soul to buy bliss. I have an inward treasure born with me, which can keep me alive if all extraneous delights should be withheld, or offered only at a price I cannot afford to give.”
