Philadelphia'nın banliyösünde büyüyen Deborah Harkness batı Massachusetts'de, Chicago, kuzey California'da, New york'da ve güney California'da yaşadı. Bunun yanında İngiltere'nin Oxford ve Londra şehirlerinde de yaşadı. Geçtiğimiz yirmi sekiz yılda, öğrenci ve tarih alanında bilim kadını olan Deborah Harkness'nin Mount Holyoke College, Northwestern Üniversitesi ve California Üniversitesinden diplomaları vardır. Bu süre boyunca, Avrupa'da 1500 ile 1700 tarihleri arasındaki bilim ve sihir tarihi üzerinde araştırmalar yaptı. İngiltere'de çeşitli kütüphanelerde çalıştı.
