I usually strive to read book in order to improve my both reading and writing skill, but sometimes finding a book which is close to academic level can be difficult. Nevertheless, this book is appropriate for people who want to develop their english skills. That is because, unlike some books which are very detailed, Philosophy 101 is both brief and explanatory. Therefore, without getting bored, you can read this book with ease. Furthermore, it begins with pre-socratic era, and continue with some scholars such as Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Russell, Sartre, Nietzsche and so on. Even though this book mention about these people' lives, also author clarify some complicated theories which are related to philosophy. However, I found this book in bibliopole because we can not purchase this book on Internet. Besides this, there are a lot of books that are related distinct subjects like World History, Mythology, and Religion. Of course they was published in the same publishing house as a crash course, but we can only buy through Amazon at a high cost. In brief, when you come across with these type of books, never miss them. (If you notice my grammar mistakes, you can warn me.)

3/5 Stars (%63/100) Probably the longest and the most detailed anthology kind of book that I've read regarding Japanese myths and legends. It starts with the creation myth and the things that are known to people. (People who are not particularly interested in mythology but heard of them) Then, things get a little crazy. What I mean by crazy is that even though there are many chapters that split the subjects or characters the book is still somewhat complicated to read. It becomes especially hard when the author states his opinions. (which he does a lot by the way.) The thing that bothered me and many people is the author. I know that the book is originally written in early 20th century but the author is extremely visible in the book. Other than that, the narration in general was a bit dull and boring. The best thing about the book is that there are A LOT of materials to work on. I've learned many things. (Even though they are on surface level.) It forces or encourages you to research more about that particular character or subject. In general, it is a good source, but not very successful or sufficient.

5/5 Stars (%93/100) “People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances with our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.” It has been a while since I've enjoyed a book this much, especially a mythological one. The Power of Myth, however, is not merely a book about mythology. It offers so much more and that is why I loved it. It contains many many things yet it is very easy to read and understand. I had so much reading it because of the form of the book. It is essentially an interview between Campbell and Bill Moyers. Moyers asked every question that I was curious about and Campbell gives brilliant answers with many examples. "Giving birth is definitely a heroic deed, in that it is the giving over of oneself to the life of another." The book has eight chapters; I-Myth and the Modern World II-The Journey Inward III-The First Storytellers IV-Sacrifice and Bliss V-The Hero's Adventure VI-The Gift of the Goddesses VII-Tales of Love and Marriage VIII-Masks of Eternity I enjoyed each and every chapter of the book but chapter V was especially interesting and fun to read. On the surface, the book is about myths and mythology. However, through mythology it teaches you many things about life, marriage, women and men, history and more. It is a mythology book with historical, philosophical, psychological and anthropological. On top of all of that, it is an excellent source for various mythologies.

Kitaba bayildim!

5/5 Stars (%95/100) Overall, I quite enjoyed the entirety of the book. This is part of Fry's Greek Mythology series even though the books are not completely related. Mythos was an interesting read for sure. However, since I enjoy the deeds of mortal more, I liked this book a bit more as well. Starting from the Gods, Fry moves on to the lives and journeys of famous heroes such as Perseus, Heracles, Bellerophon, Orpheus, Jason, Atalanta, Oedipus, and Theseus. There are also other information about certain monsters (Chimera, Nemean Lion, Hydra etc.). There is a long list of important characters as well as beautiful illustrations. So, if you're interested in Greek Mythology and you've read Mythos, you would enjoy this book. The one thing I really like about Fry is his way of storytelling. In that way, he reminds me of Neil Gaiman. Both are great storytellers in their own sense. Instead of saying "he went there, he killed that, he died," Fry retells the stories in his own way and writes interesting and often funny dialogues. This is also the reason why I really enjoyed reading the things I already know. It was also good to remember certain information about lesser known heroes such as Bellerophon and Atalanta. In short, this is a well-written book and it was fun to read. The third book in this series is already out (Troy) and I heard that the fourth one is coming soon as well (The Odyssey).

"The Name of the Rose” which is a post-modern work was written by Umberto Eco in 1980. It is a historical murder mystery. Umberto Eco is a medieval expert. The author deals with the Middle Ages in a fictional structure, while at the same time providing real information about the state - church-sects, along with his deep historical research.

4/5 Stars (%79/100) It is obvious that Tolkien was heavily inspired by a variety of myths and mythological characters. However, it seems that he was really interested in Norse mythology not only because of this book. Tolkien borrowed many names from Norse mythology either directly or changing it slightly. (This can be observed especially with the names of the dwarves in The Hobbit) Some of the stories in Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales are also similar to Norse myths. Sigurd is a famous hero that slew the greedy dragon Fafnir. (Previously a famous dwarf) The myth of Sigurd does not end with Fafnir. Perhaps even more famous story is about him is his relationship between Gudrun and indirectly Brynhild. Völsunga Saga talks about Sigurd in great detail. Tolkien was interested in these tales and wanted to contribute to it. These tales are of grief, love, and sorrow which is very prominent in many of Tolkien's other works. This is a great book that needs more love. So, if you are interested in mythology and Tolkien, you should one hundred percent check this book out.

4/5 Stars (%82/100) This volume is definitely better than the previous one. The fight between Lu Bu and Thor comes to an end at the beginning of this book. The second fight is between Adam, yes that Adam from Christianity, and Zeus. First of all, the first fight was really good even though I did not know a lot of things about Lu Bu. However, since Norse mythology is my favourite, I loved the changes made to Thor and the myths about him. The second fight starts out great and I love Adam's character and design. Zeus pisses me off but he is actually very close to his self in Greek Mythology. Since I watched the anime, I know what happens next but I'm still curious because the manga is much more detailed.

Better than Rupi Kaur but still pretty bad
2/5 Stars (%34/100) Another "instapoet" who became a writer because of their popularity on social media. Before you yell at me let me clear one thing; I am not anti-feminist nor I have any grudge against women or anyone who identify themself as women. I didn't like this book rather I found it okay because of the writing only. With that out of the way let me talk about the book itself. First of all, this not a poetry book. I refuse to accept the "things" that are in this book as poetry. This is the case of Rupi Kaur all over again. when you write like this people like it it seems The so called poetry in the book looks like this. They are not beautiful or make sense at all. However, some of the prose was actually interesting. Perhaps the only thing that made me read the book is the fact that Gill talked about lesser goddesses and other women who stayed in the background because they are wives of great heroes. This is why it was good to read more things about them. However, most of them were still boring and painful to go through. Like Rupi Kaur, she is trying too hard and it is obvious when you read it as well. I would have DNF it but I finished it nonetheless. In short, the "poems" in this book are terrible. The prose is okay but most of them are still cringy and boring. It is good that Greek mythology is getting more recognition in contemporary literature and it was also interesting to read about certain women who are less known by people.

4/5 Stars (%77/100) Some parts were just WOW but there were also some parts, especially in the beginning, that I got really confused and that is due to Zelazny's writing style. You are simply thrown into the story and since Zelazny likes to combine sci-fi and mythology, it becomes even more complicated. The narration goes back and forth between the past, 12th century, and the future, or the present we could call it. However, this is also what made me like Zelazny in the first place. On top of that, Norse Mythology is my all-time favorite and Loki is the one I like the most. Yet, the slow start and complicated narration might not be for everyone. The ending and the last few chapters were phenomenal and if you like Zelazny, you should definitely give this one a chance. If you are new to him, I would probably suggest This Immortal or Lord of Light.

5/5 stars (%100/100) My first and favorite book by Neil Gaiman. This is one of the very few books that I consider life-changing. American Gods was my biggest inspiration when I wrote my novel. After reading this book, I trust Neil Gaiman's pen with my eyes closed. I will try my best to review this book in some categories. 1-Old

Could be better
3/5 Stars (%58/100) The book was originally published in 1880 and if you consider that fact, then it could get a higher mark. I've read most of the books out there that deal with Greek and Roman mythology, whether it is a textbook, like this one, or a fantasy/sci-fi book with mythological elements. Even though this book started as interesting, I found myself getting bored because it is presented as a history book. I love history but when it is explained in a simple but fun way. The same thing is true for mythology as well since it is highly related to history. This is why I really liked Gaiman's Norse Mythology and recently Stephen Fry's Mythos. Those books also contain a lot of information but both Gaiman and Fry are brilliant storytellers. Sadly, Berens is not, he is more like a history professor. The book contains good information about a lot of myths and legends. I especially liked the comparison between Greek and Roman when talking about the same myth or the deity. Talking about festivals like Saturnalia is also interesting. However, the biggest problem is the way all of these are presented: boring. Nonetheless, it is still a good source for Greek and Roman mythology.

5/5 Stars. (%92/100) I've read the Turkish translation first even though I had the English copy before that. However, after loving the book, I decided to read it in the original language and I loved it again. I was taking a gender course around the same time so I decided to write an article about the book. I wrote an article titled "Victim or Witch? Circe as an Allegory of Women’s Struggle during the Feminist Movement" and it is not possible for me to copy everything here. (I mean I could but there's no point since it is very long) Instead, here are some things that I liked about the book -Detailed life of Circe (Originally a very less-known character in mythology) -Presenting Circe as a woman that many other women can relate to despite her divinity -The dialogues (the language, the tone and Miller's style) especially between Circe and Odysseus -The ending of the book -The male characters such as Odysseus, Telegonus, Telemachus, and even Apollo I know that the book became very popular very quickly so you might be hesitant to read it. However, I absolutely loved it and people know that I hate popular books like %98 of the time. Also, if you want to read it, you could send a message to me and I would send my article to you.

3/5 Stars (%60/100) I had a hard time rating this book. The cover is beautiful, the whole design of the book is brilliant and there are dozens of pretty illustrations together with maps, timelines, and so forth. Visually, the book is stunning and can be a great piece for Tolkien lovers. However, I have to admit that the things discussed in the book are not very great. Starting from Melkor and going all the way to the Third Age, Day compares the evil figures in Tolkien's works with figures from Greek and Norse mythology as well as Judeo-Christian images. The biggest problem I had with these is, as many others already pointed out, that there is not enough evidence or it feels a bit of stretch. For example, comparing Ungoliant with Kali the Hindu Goddess because they have eight legs/arms. Also, the comparison between Sauron and Solomon regarding the ring. There are many examples like this and it becomes repetitive after a while. However, it was still interesting to see certain connections and parallels despite the lack of evidence. I think the book would have been better if it only focused on the evil figures in Tolkien's works, like a summary or description of all the bad guys because the illustrations are beautiful and they are great to learn more about these somewhat complicated characters (honestly, that's what I thought the book was about before I've read it). Finally, even though there are some problems, I think rating the book extremely low is a bit harsh as I enjoyed reading it and looking at the pictures.
