3/5 Stars (%65/100) It was good in general but some parts were difficult to follow because the characters, point of view and genres shift constantly. Transcending the traditional boundaries is good but I feel like it was a bit overdone. I especially enjoyed the parts about Chinese folklore and mythology. A woman (especially someone with a similar identity as Kingston) would probably enjoy the book more as she would be able to understand some issues better. Also, I've seen someone else comment it and I'm glad I'm not the only one because there were lots of generalizations about the Chinese experience. When we talk about Chinese people, more specifically those who call themselves Chinese Americans, there are numerous individuals with different experiences. However, Kingston seems to talk more generally in most parts. All in all, it is a unique and impactful book.

4/5 Stars (%80/100) I was supposed to present this in class for my master's. That's why I was really hesitant and thought I would hate this. Surprisingly, it was much much better than I expected. I'm not really familiar with Nigerian history or culture but I do know some things about African mythology. That's how I was able to connect some dots. I was really drawn into the novel and most of the time I was sad and angry. That's why I really needed that happy ending. It was great to see the growth of Ijeoma and her acceptance of her sexual identity (also coming to terms with her religion). Under the Udala Trees really surprised me and I'm sure I'll remember it for a long time.

4/5 Stars (%78/100) Even though I was forced to read Emerson during my bachelor's, I really liked his style and his perspective on nature as a transcendentalist. Because he was heavily influenced by Hindu mythology and Persian Sufism, Emerson rejected the material world and focused on the spiritual world where the divine/God exists. That's the basic principle of Transcendentalism anyway. Nature is one of the most, if not the most important work of Emerson and even though there are many parts that I agree, I think I still prefer "The American Scholar." Still, no one can deny the importance of Emerson and his works in all American history.

The culture and knowledge of sex has progressed and regressed throughout history. Margolis uses mythology and research to discuss the orgasm, which is often misperceived due to reluctance by many to have a frank discussion about it. Beginning as a (largely unauthorized) celebrity biographer, Margolis was shunned for his work by many of the celebrities about whom he wrote. So, while it is understandable that he would decide to take a break from getting glared at by the glamorous, I am interested in what drove him to write about orgasms, and, thus, probably get glared at by a much larger audience. This is intended as a research book, so there are a few dry spots where I found my mind wandering. For most of the book, I found myself intrigued, which was surprising considering the dense research. However, Margolis is a strong writer who makes the history an enjoyable read.

The Wisdom of Odin
The book is about the words of Odin himself; the chief god, god of gods in Norse mythology. Surprisingly, the poem which consists of more small poems, stanzas and sections, is very relateable even today. It gives us insight about life and advices us about how to live our lives. Hávamál reminds us to be friends to those who are friends to us, and enemies to those who secretly seek our fall. It reminds to live a bold and brave life while remaining quiet and watchful, not bragging about anything and becoming a prey to our pride like Odin to Fenrir on the day of Ragnarok. The poem advices us to live a life of dignity and wisdom. It reminds us to experience everything in the world, but not overindulge in any of them. It suggests us to have fun and drink, but not get drunk; to fall in love but not become blindly attached and forget yourself; to befriend people, but never put yourself down for others; to experienve everything in moderation and live your life to the fullest. The translator Jackson Crawford is a master in this field. This translation is definitely much better than others and if you've read this, I suggest you read his translation of The Saga of The Volsungs. Overall, there is much wisdom and good advice to be taken from this thousand-year-old poem. Definitely give it a read.

THEORIES OF MYTHOLOGY

Set during the Klondike Gold Rush, like several of Jack London’s stories including probably his two most famous; Call of the Wild and White Fang, The Odyssey of the North tells the tale of a Native retrieving his wife back from being stolen. The story was more than likely marketed as an adventure tale but like all of London’s work, if one only
