Sandman'dan sonra Neil Gaiman sevgim yeniden tavan yapti, o donemde de bu kitap cikinca on siparisten hemen edindim. Ancak her ne kadar zekasina ve hayal gucune hayran olsam da icime sinmeyen bir seyler oluyordu her kitabinda. Ozellikle Amerikan Tanrilari'ndan sonra biraz cekinir olmustum.
Ancak bu kitabina hayran kaldim! Cocuklugum hem Yunan hem de Antik Misir mitoloji hikayeleri ile gecti, butun Tanri'larini, butun hikayalerini ezbere bilirdim. Ancak, Marvel'e bile ilham vermis olan Norvec Mitolojisi hakkinda en ufak bir fikrim bile yoktu. Son yillardaki Marvel sinematik evreniyle (2008-2018 ve sonrasi) Thor ve Loki'nin maceralari yeniden on plana cikti ve benim de ilgimi cekti. Dolayisiyla da bir bakayim istedim neler varmis kitapta diye.
Kitap, bir Neil Gaiman kurgusu degil. Gercekteki Norvec mitolojik hikayelerinin derlenmesi. Evrenin ve tanrilarin olusumu ile baslayip Ragnarok (Kiyamet)'a kadar olan surecteki yaklasik 12-15 hikaye sunuyor. Bu hikayeler kronolojik olarak siralanmis ancak birbirinden bagimsiz hikayeler. Bu hikayeler icinde Odin'in bir gozunu nasil kaybettigini, Thor'un Mjolnir'i nasil edindigi gibi pek cok soruya cevap buluyoruz.
Daha evvel de dedigim gibi, kitap bir Neil Gaiman kurgusu degil, var olan efsanelere yeni bir yorum ve soluk kazandirmis. Kitabin dili inanilmaz rahat. Sanki Hobbit diliyle Silmarillon okumusum gibi hissettim.
Marvel dunyasinda Thor ve Aasgard tanrilarini tanidiktan sonra bu kitabi okuyunca karsilasilabilecek bence en buyuk saskinlik ise Thor:) Thor, Marvel'deki karakterinin aksine, oldukca duz mantik, biraz aptal ve sadece fiziksel gucu olan biri.

It has been a while since I've enjoyed a book this much, especially a mythological one.
The Power of Myth, however, is not merely a book about mythology. It offers so much more and that is why I loved it. It contains many many things yet it is very easy to read and understand. I had so much reading it because of the form of the book. It is essentially an interview between Campbell and Bill Moyers. Moyers asked every question that I was curious about and Campbell gives brilliant answers with many examples.

I enjoyed each and every chapter of the book but chapter V was especially interesting and fun to read. On the surface, the book is about myths and mythology. However, through mythology it teaches you many things about life, marriage, women and men, history and more. It is a mythology book with historical, philosophical, psychological and anthropological. On top of all of that, it is an excellent source for various mythologies.

Forster Award, the St. Louis Literary Award, also Lambda Literary Award. Frankissstein by Jeanette Winterson is written in 2019 and it is a postmodernist novel that giving a sense of re-writing
Thanatopsis' is written as an encouragement for mankind. The title is composed of two words: 'thanatos,' which means 'death,' and 'opsis,' which means 'view,' so 'Thanatopsis' actually means 'a view of death. The name comes from ancient greek mythology. In greek mythology ‘thanatos’ stands for bodily appearance of death. And ‘opsis’ means side, view, or appearance. The poem has a view of death. In this case, we understand that the poet is on the meditation on death, so there is a strong relation between death and nature. The poet tells us we should consider what nature has to say about death and dying and then proceeds to discuss how death is experienced by everyone, regardless of status, and should therefore be seen as something to be embraced rather than feared.

Ben bir İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı öğrencisiyim ve bu kitabı da şahsen derste kullandığımız için okudum. Ama bana iyi ki okumuşum ve iyi ki dersi başka bir kitapla değil de bununla işlemişiz dedirten bir kitap oldu.
İçerisinde tanrıların aşk hikayelerinden, insanların epik hikayelerine kadar bir sürü hikaye var. Bunları pekiştirmek için test ve alıştırmalar da var ki hem çözmesi zevkli hem de hikayeleri ve karakterleri anlama yüzdenizi en yukarılara çıkarıyor. Ayrıca kitabın en başındaki tanrıların tanımlandığı bölümleri de oldukça faydalı buldum.
Dili için konuşacak olursam, B2 seviyesinde İngilizce bilen birinin rahatça anlayabileceği bir kitap olduğunu düşünüyorum. En azından hikaye kısımlarına kadar. Çünkü kitap ilerledikçe karşınıza sizi zorlayacak kelimeler çıkıyor ki bunu aslında iyi bir şey olarak alıyorum. Çünkü blmediğiniz kelimeler her zaman dilinizi geliştirmek için karşınıza çıkan fırsatlardır, ben buna inanıyorum.
Kısacası mitolojiye başlamak istiyorsanız ve İngilizce biliyorsanız kesinlikle öneririm.

"The Name of the Rose” which is a post-modern work was written by Umberto Eco in 1980. It is a historical murder mystery. Umberto Eco is a medieval expert. The author deals with the Middle Ages in a fictional structure, while at the same time providing real information about the state - church-sects, along with his deep historical research.

Probably the longest and the most detailed anthology kind of book that I've read regarding Japanese myths and legends.
It starts with the creation myth and the things that are known to people. (People who are not particularly interested in mythology but heard of them) Then, things get a little crazy. What I mean by crazy is that even though there are many chapters that split the subjects or characters the book is still somewhat complicated to read. It becomes especially hard when the author states his opinions. (which he does a lot by the way.)
The thing that bothered me and many people is the author. I know that the book is originally written in early 20th century but the author is extremely visible in the book. Other than that, the narration in general was a bit dull and boring.
The best thing about the book is that there are A LOT of materials to work on. I've learned many things. (Even though they are on surface level.) It forces or encourages you to research more about that particular character or subject.
In general, it is a good source, but not very successful or sufficient.

My first and favorite book by Neil Gaiman. This is one of the very few books that I consider life-changing. American Gods was my biggest inspiration when I wrote my novel. After reading this book, I trust Neil Gaiman's pen with my eyes closed. I will try my best to review this book in some categories.

It is obvious that Tolkien was heavily inspired by a variety of myths and mythological characters. However, it seems that he was really interested in Norse mythology not only because of this book. Tolkien borrowed many names from Norse mythology either directly or changing it slightly. (This can be observed especially with the names of the dwarves in The Hobbit) Some of the stories in Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales are also similar to Norse myths.
Sigurd is a famous hero that slew the greedy dragon Fafnir. (Previously a famous dwarf) The myth of Sigurd does not end with Fafnir. Perhaps even more famous story is about him is his relationship between Gudrun and indirectly Brynhild. Völsunga Saga talks about Sigurd in great detail. Tolkien was interested in these tales and wanted to contribute to it. These tales are of grief, love, and sorrow which is very prominent in many of Tolkien's other works. This is a great book that needs more love. So, if you are interested in mythology and Tolkien, you should one hundred percent check this book out.
I usually strive to read book in order to improve my both reading and writing skill, but sometimes finding a book which is close to academic level can be difficult. Nevertheless, this book is appropriate for people who want to develop their english skills. That is because, unlike some books which are very detailed, Philosophy 101 is both brief and explanatory. Therefore, without getting bored, you can read this book with ease.
Furthermore, it begins with pre-socratic era, and continue with some scholars such as Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Russell, Sartre, Nietzsche and so on. Even though this book mention about these people' lives, also author clarify some complicated theories which are related to philosophy.
However, I found this book in bibliopole because we can not purchase this book on Internet. Besides this, there are a lot of books that are related distinct subjects like World History, Mythology, and Religion. Of course they was published in the same publishing house as a crash course, but we can only buy through Amazon at a high cost. In brief, when you come across with these type of books, never miss them.

Overall, I quite enjoyed the entirety of the book. This is part of Fry's Greek Mythology series even though the books are not completely related. Mythos was an interesting read for sure. However, since I enjoy the deeds of mortal more, I liked this book a bit more as well. Starting from the Gods, Fry moves on to the lives and journeys of famous heroes such as Perseus, Heracles, Bellerophon, Orpheus, Jason, Atalanta, Oedipus, and Theseus. There are also other information about certain monsters (Chimera, Nemean Lion, Hydra etc.). There is a long list of important characters as well as beautiful illustrations. So, if you're interested in Greek Mythology and you've read Mythos, you would enjoy this book.
The one thing I really like about Fry is his way of storytelling. In that way, he reminds me of Neil Gaiman. Both are great storytellers in their own sense. Instead of saying "he went there, he killed that, he died," Fry retells the stories in his own way and writes interesting and often funny dialogues. This is also the reason why I really enjoyed reading the things I already know. It was also good to remember certain information about lesser known heroes such as Bellerophon and Atalanta. In short, this is a well-written book and it was fun to read. The third book in this series is already out (Troy) and I heard that the fourth one is coming soon as well (The Odyssey).

Another "instapoet" who became a writer because of their popularity on social media. Before you yell at me let me clear one thing; I am not anti-feminist nor I have any grudge against women or anyone who identify themself as women. I didn't like this book rather I found it okay because of the writing only. With that out of the way let me talk about the book itself.
First of all, this not a poetry book. I refuse to accept the "things" that are in this book as poetry. This is the case of Rupi Kaur all over again.

The so called poetry in the book looks like this. They are not beautiful or make sense at all. However, some of the prose was actually interesting. Perhaps the only thing that made me read the book is the fact that Gill talked about lesser goddesses and other women who stayed in the background because they are wives of great heroes. This is why it was good to read more things about them. However, most of them were still boring and painful to go through. Like Rupi Kaur, she is trying too hard and it is obvious when you read it as well. I would have DNF it but I finished it nonetheless.
In short, the "poems" in this book are terrible. The prose is okay but most of them are still cringy and boring. It is good that Greek mythology is getting more recognition in contemporary literature and it was also interesting to read about certain women who are less known by people.

It was good in general but some parts were difficult to follow because the characters, point of view and genres shift constantly. Transcending the traditional boundaries is good but I feel like it was a bit overdone. I especially enjoyed the parts about Chinese folklore and mythology. A woman (especially someone with a similar identity as Kingston) would probably enjoy the book more as she would be able to understand some issues better. Also, I've seen someone else comment it and I'm glad I'm not the only one because there were lots of generalizations about the Chinese experience. When we talk about Chinese people, more specifically those who call themselves Chinese Americans, there are numerous individuals with different experiences. However, Kingston seems to talk more generally in most parts. All in all, it is a unique and impactful book.
