First of all, it was an easy and comfortable book to read, and it had everything you would expect from a romance novel. The characters constantly running into each other, the male main character always being the one who saves the woman, those moments where the female character is like “I don’t depend on a man, look, I’m strong too,” and the fact that they immediately fell for each other from the very first moment they saw each other — it had all of those things. The girl loving luxury but also having those “I’m not like that” moments was there too. Even the way they acted like teenagers experiencing love for the first time was included. I was expecting something more interesting, especially since the main character was supposedly bisexual, but she basically fell for the first handsome and rich man she saw. I didn’t like any of the characters. Honestly, it was obvious how the ending would go. They were either going to get married or he was going to propose, and that unnecessary breakup scene the author added just to create some drama was so pointless. It was nice to read something that reflected Armenian culture, and the book has an English level that flows easily and doesn’t make the reader struggle too much. But aside from that, I feel like something was missing. It could have been much better. It’s readable, but I don’t think it’s a book that should be taken too seriously. In my opinion, it was just a very light, “snackable” read.

There is actually nothing to say about the book, as it doesn’t have any engaging passages or a real plot. We are reading paragraphs about two friends who don’t have any emotional connection with each other but who are only attracted to one another sexually. I mean, normal people have feelings, daily routines, and sometimes interesting dialogues, but these two have absolutely nothing in common, neither daily routines nor any interesting actions happening in their lives. I chose this book because of its simplicity; it was a good choice for my language level, but there was nothing interesting or appealing in terms of the story or the characters. It’s good to see new writers doing interesting things, and even if I’m a bit distant from the bestseller shelves or new writers, I’d like to give this book a chance and maybe break my prejudices. Unfortunately, I didn’t like the book and saw it as a waste of time. Saying that makes me a bit sad because Sally Rooney seems to be a courageous person who raises social awareness about what is happening around the world. I’ll still keep my distance from her books, but I hope that won’t last forever.

I’m really happy that I read this book at this time of my life—it makes me feel good. I used to think it was only a children’s book. I saw it in my friends’ hands; it was even given as a gift to my younger brother. But I didn’t have one. Now I have read it in English and I just finished it. Near the end, I started to like it more and I understood its message. Trying for something, not giving up, and working hard… On this way, a person learns to be with themselves, and this is a very nice feeling. Sometimes we feel tired or hopeless—this is normal. I think feeling all these emotions is a very good thing for a person. And if we understand them and still do something, we are really lucky.

My journey with this story began unexpectedly when I saw a vintage GIF of a young woman reading on a train. That aesthetic curiosity led me to the 1945 film and, eventually, this captivating novel. What struck me most was the circular narrative structure; beginning and ending with Richard Harland’s return, it creates a sense of inevitability. While many focus on Ellen’s "monstrous" nature, I found the supporting characters equally unsettling. The "pure" characters—the Mother, Ruth, and Richard—were far from innocent. There was a subtle, pervasive gaslighting at play, particularly from Ellen's mother, which added layers of psychological complexity to the tragedy. Richard often acted as a passive participant in his own life, behaving as though the marriage was something forced upon him, even though Ellen’s obsession was clear from the start. The presence of Danny served as a pivotal trial for everyone involved, pushing Ellen’s jealousy toward a point of no return. Though Ellen committed truly heinous acts, the book succeeds because it shows a "Mastermind" created by an environment of emotional neglect and obsession. The finale was haunting and perfectly executed—a dark masterpiece of Technicolor Noir.

Yazarı aslında severim. Hatta The Summer I First Saw You’yu o kadar sevmiştim ki iki kez okuduğum bile oldu.
