This kind of split between the "I" who issues orders and the "he" who carries them out (whom the "I" in S. visualized) persisted throughout his life. "He" would go off when it was necessary; "he" would recall things; the "I" would merely instruct, direct, control. If we had not been aware of the psychological mechanisms behind those vivid graphic "visions" of S.'s which we have examined in such detail here, we might easily have been led to take him for one of those "split personalities" psychiatrists deal with, and with whom S.'s particular kind of "cutting himself off" had so little in common. His ability to "see" himself in this way, to "cut himself off," to convert his experiences and activity into an image of another person who carried out his instructions—all this was of enormous help to him in regulating his own behavior. We had a glimpse of this earlier when we observed how he was able to control his vegetative processes and eliminate pain by transferring it to another person.

Hate was a funny thing. It gnawed at her insides like poison. It made every muscle in her body tense, made her veins boil so hot she thought her head might split in half, and yet it fueled everything she did. Hate was its own kind of fire and if you had nothing else, it kept you warm.
This four-step process is not something that happens occasionally, but rather it is an endless feedback loop that is running and active during every moment you are alive—even now. The brain is continually scanning the environment, predicting what will happen next, trying out different responses, and learning from the results. The entire process is completed in a split second, and we use it again and again without realizing everything that has been packed into the previous moment.
