In Ward No. 6, Anton Chekhov constructs a quiet but devastating meditation on suffering, indifference, and the fragile boundary between sanity and madness. Set in a decaying provincial hospital, the story revolves around Dr. Andrey Yefimych Ragin, a man who has retreated into intellectual detachment as a way of coping with the bleakness of life. The hospital itself, neglected and almost forgotten, becomes more than a setting; it functions as a symbol of a broader social and moral decay, where suffering is not only present but systematically ignored. At the center of the narrative lies a philosophical tension that gradually unfolds through the doctor’s encounters with the patient Ivan Dmitrich Gromov. Ragin subscribes, at least superficially, to a version of Stoicism. Stoicism, originating in ancient Greek philosophy, teaches that individuals should cultivate inner peace by accepting what they cannot control and by remaining indifferent to external pain or pleasure. In its original form, it is a disciplined ethical system aimed at resilience and moral clarity. However, Ragin’s interpretation is hollowed out. What he practices is not active moral strength but passive withdrawal. He convinces himself that suffering is insignificant, that pain is merely a matter of perception, and therefore not worth resisting. This belief allows him to justify his inaction in the face of the hospital’s inhumane conditions. Gromov, by contrast, embodies a radically different philosophical stance, one that could be described as an existential sensitivity to injustice. He is deeply affected by the possibility of suffering, oppression, and arbitrariness in human life. His anxiety and paranoia are not presented merely as symptoms of illness but as exaggerated responses to real conditions of

Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre is a powerful female narrative that symbolizes individual resistance against the strict moral and social structure of the Victorian Era. The novel is especially significant in terms of feminist and sociocultural readings. Despite all the hardships she endures, Jane remains true to her own sense of morality and selfhood. Her refusal to submit to Mr. Rochester without an equal relationship, despite her deep love for him, can be read as a proto-feminist representation of female individuality. The story is told in the first person from Jane’s perspective, which allows the reader direct access to her inner world and personal struggles. The gothic atmosphere (Thornfield Hall, the screams from the attic, Bertha Mason) continues the classic tradition of English gothic fiction, while the emphasis on nature and personal emotion reflects the influence of Romanticism. Themes such as class distinction, the hypocrisy of religious institutions, and moral decay are carefully explored. Jane’s journey from the lowest social class to gaining respect through her intelligence and integrity serves as a pointed critique of the class structure of the time. The character of Bertha Mason, in particular, is controversial from a postcolonial perspective; her portrayal as the “other” reflects traces of colonialism in English literature. Jane Eyre, with its multilayered narrative, feminist subtext, and its critiques of class and colonialism, provides not only literary but also cultural, historical, and theoretical grounds for analysis. To summarize, the suffering Jane endures is followed by her resistance, and not mentioning the fluidity of the novel—where we feel as if we're inside the story—would be unfair. The rich descriptions, which I believe reflect traces of

Set in Kyoto during a period of societal decay, Ryūnosuke Akutagawa’s Rashomon explores the desperation of survival in a world unraveling at its seams. The story begins with an unnamed servant, recently dismissed and sheltering from the rain beneath the crumbling Rashomon gate. The gate, once a proud symbol of the city, has become a place of neglect and death, where unclaimed corpses are discarded. Confronted with his dire circumstances, the servant debates abandoning his moral principles to ensure his survival. His thoughts veer towards theft, but he is paralyzed by the weight of his conscience, caught between righteousness and the instinct to live. The tension escalates when he notices an old woman scavenging hair from corpses beneath the gate. Her act initially horrifies him, and he confronts her in a moment of moral outrage. The woman defends her actions by rationalizing that the dead had been dishonest in life, implying that her actions are merely a continuation of the cycle of deceit and survival. Her reasoning strikes a chord with the servant, who realizes that survival demands ruthless pragmatism. In a shocking reversal, he attacks the old woman, steals her belongings, and disappears into the night, having fully surrendered to the amorality he once resisted. Akutagawa’s Rashomon delves deeply into the tension between morality and survival, posing difficult questions about human nature. The servant’s transformation from an ethical man to a thief highlights the fragility of moral principles when faced with desperation. The story suggests that morality is not an absolute but a construct shaped by circumstances; in a world devoid of order and stability, self-preservation often takes precedence over virtue. This bleak view of humanity is reinforced by the old

One of Shakespeare’s most gripping tragedies, explores the destructive nature of unchecked ambition. Set in a dark, foreboding Scotland, the play follows Macbeth’s ruthless ascent to power, driven by prophecy and his own moral decay. Shakespeare masterfully portrays the psychological turmoil of Macbeth and his wife, as their guilt manifests in madness and paranoia. Themes of fate, power, and moral consequence intertwine with rich, poetic language, creating an intense, haunting narrative. Macbeth remains a timeless reflection on the human soul’s capacity for ambition and the catastrophic consequences of succumbing to it.
