In Ward No. 6, Anton Chekhov constructs a quiet but devastating meditation on suffering, indifference, and the fragile boundary between sanity and madness. Set in a decaying provincial hospital, the story revolves around Dr. Andrey Yefimych Ragin, a man who has retreated into intellectual detachment as a way of coping with the bleakness of life. The hospital itself, neglected and almost forgotten, becomes more than a setting; it functions as a symbol of a broader social and moral decay, where suffering is not only present but systematically ignored. At the center of the narrative lies a philosophical tension that gradually unfolds through the doctor’s encounters with the patient Ivan Dmitrich Gromov. Ragin subscribes, at least superficially, to a version of Stoicism. Stoicism, originating in ancient Greek philosophy, teaches that individuals should cultivate inner peace by accepting what they cannot control and by remaining indifferent to external pain or pleasure. In its original form, it is a disciplined ethical system aimed at resilience and moral clarity. However, Ragin’s interpretation is hollowed out. What he practices is not active moral strength but passive withdrawal. He convinces himself that suffering is insignificant, that pain is merely a matter of perception, and therefore not worth resisting. This belief allows him to justify his inaction in the face of the hospital’s inhumane conditions. Gromov, by contrast, embodies a radically different philosophical stance, one that could be described as an existential sensitivity to injustice. He is deeply affected by the possibility of suffering, oppression, and arbitrariness in human life. His anxiety and paranoia are not presented merely as symptoms of illness but as exaggerated responses to real conditions of

Frank T. Vertosick Jr. describes his personal voyage from eager medical student to board certified neurosurgeon. By turns comic and tragic, this memoir is a must read for neurosurgeons but also of interest to most readers. Dr Vertosick provides, from an American perspective, a keen insight into a specialty which is often regarded with suspicion by other doctors. He did not initially intend to become a neurosurgeon, but “strayed too close to a dangerously seductive profession and became stuck for good like a fly in a spider’s web.” On his first day as a neurosurgical resident, a cynical and weary chief resident takes him aside and outlines the “Rules of Neurosurgery.” The first of these provides the title of the book: “You ain’t never the same when the air hits your brain.” A worrying proposition to those with no background knowledge, nevertheless this maxim pithily sums up the subtle, intangible change that often occurs after cranial surgery, but which cannot be neatly recorded on a chart. The other rules include such useful aphorisms as “the only minor operation is one that someone else is doing” and “if the patient isn’t dead you can always make them worse,” a contemporary variation on the Hippocratic motto: "primum non nocere." Though lighthearted in tone, the book addresses serious points that are relevant to the practice of neurosurgery in particular and medicine in general. Medical careers tend to be dominated by anecdotes. Clinicians all remember their first times, the medical curiosities they have encountered, and, perhaps most importantly, their mistakes. Dr Vertosick’s trial by fire comes during a craniotomy and clipping of aneurysm. At first the case progresses well, but suddenly he is faced with a “crimson flood” as the aneurysm ruptures, with catastrophic results for

Summary: "No Longer Human," written by Osamu Dazai, is a deeply introspective and profoundly personal novel that delves into the tormented psyche of its narrator, Yozo Oba. The story is told in the form of Yozo's confessional diary, revealing his struggles with a sense of alienation and inability to conform to societal norms. Yozo's narrative explores his encounters with art, love, and human connection as he grapples with his own inadequacies and a relentless feeling of not belonging to the human race. Review: "No Longer Human" is a masterpiece of Japanese literature that presents a profoundly disturbing and haunting examination of the human condition. Osamu Dazai's narrative is a tour de force in portraying the inner workings of a deeply troubled mind. Yozo Oba's confessional diary is an unflinching account of his existential anguish and emotional detachment from the world. The novel immerses readers in a world of alienation, psychological turmoil, and societal disillusionment. While Yozo's experiences and emotions may be difficult for some readers to directly relate to, the book's power lies in its ability to convey the universality of the human struggle to fit in, find meaning, and confront one's own demons. Dazai's writing is both poetic and raw, capturing the essence of a man grappling with his own inadequacies and despair. The novel's themes of mental health, societal expectations, and the search for identity resonate with readers across cultures and time periods. The unconventional narrative structure, presented as a confessional diary, gives readers a unique perspective into Yozo's inner world and the complexities of his character. Yozo's feelings of not belonging and his destructive behavior mirror the alienation that many individuals experience at

A Deconstruction of Existential Crisis

“Nausea” written by Jean-Paul Sartre is a work that delves deep into human psychology. It also discovers the nature of existence and the meaning of life. The novel was published in 1938 and became a seminal work for existentialist literature. Today, the book continues to captivate readers with its haunting atmosphere and philosophical prose. In my opinion, Nausea is not only a fascinating novel but also a self-examination on the nature of existence and the human condition. Also, it is a work that forces its reader to question their fundamental beliefs about reality and their place in it… To begin with, "Nausea" is a philosophical novel about a man named Roquentin, who finds himself feeling an overwhelming sense of existential despair. Roquentin is a lonely man who has traveled to Bouville to research the life of Marquis in the eighteenth century. After that, however, he is overcome by the strangeness of his surroundings. So he begins to experience a sense of nausea that he cannot explain. The novel is centered around the diaries of Roquentin. These diaries are the documents of his thoughts and feelings. I think, especially this journal technique is significant because Sartre's use of first-person narrative is highly effective in conveying the intensity of Roquentin's feelings of alienation and despair. The reader can see Roquentin is painfully aware of the emptiness of his existence, and his questioning of the very fabric of reality is a testament to Sartre's existentialist philosophy. Another significant technique used on "Nausea" is the way that Sartre uses Roquentin's experiences to explore the nature of existence. The work is filled with Sartre's deep philosophical reflections on the meaning of existence and the nature of time. It is more than just a
