“Those are our colors,” Wong said as he dipped his thumb and began to gently apply the paint to her cheeks. “White symbolizes treachery, a sinister nature, suspicion of others, and the willingness to visit evil deeds upon them.” Kyoshi could hear Rangi snort so loudly Te might have heard it in his palace. “But,” Wong said, scooping into the other side of the case with his forefinger. “Red symbolizes honor. Loyalty. Heroism. This is the face that we show our sworn brothers and sisters. The red is the trust we have for each other, buried in the field of white but always showing through in our gaze.” He smoothed the last of the black eyeliner on her brow and stepped back to examine his handiwork. "I can’t promise it’ll stop a sharp rock or an arrow, but I can guarantee you’ll feel braver. It always does that for me.”

“You’ve been waiting for me to kiss you?” She came out from hiding and looked into my eyes with the sweetest grin on her face. “Ever since I was a little girl.” Kissing me on the cheek, she added, “Thank you for making my dream come true.” My heart ached with love for a little girl who in some ways had always belonged to me. “Was it worth the wait?” I asked, my voice gruff, my heart thundering in my chest. She scrunched up her nose, her eyes focused on my lips. “The jury is still out. You think we can try again, maybe?”
As you do not know me, I do not need a name, And, as you know me, this is why I come. You know me, but have never seen my face. To meet before was never time or place.

The magazine piece on the urban legend had stated, ‘At the end of the day, whether one returns to the past or travels to the future, the present does not change. So it raises the question: just what is the point of that chair?’. But Kazu still goes on believing that, no matter what difficulties people face, they will always have the strength to overcome them. “We both have to be prepared that this may not be the only Joining. If Kieran were to find someone, he may want to join their life to yours. You’d have to go through the Joining again.” “So he wouldn’t outlive them.” I exhaled slowly. “I wouldn’t want him to face that. I would do the Joining again if that was what he wanted.”

“If there’s another life after this one, we should make a date.” The corner of his mouth curls a bit. “Food. Small talk. Maybe I say something that makes you grin. Maybe you say something that makes me giggle. Maybe the food is crap so we drink too much wine. Maybe the full moon beckons us to the beach where we walk in the shadows of the night. Maybe you tell me something about yourself. But maybe … just maybe it’s something so honest I can’t help but fall in love with you. And maybe you build me a house and fill it with hundreds of plants and even a dog. I’ve never had a dog.” He cradles my face in his hands as I do his in mine, and we just … breathe in … and breathe out … One. Two. Three. “It’s a date.” He smiles and I cry.”

“Why?” Anh blinked at her innocently. “I put sunscreen on Jeremy all the time. Look”—she squirted lotion on her hand and haphazardly slapped it across Jeremy’s face— “I am putting sunscreen on my boyfriend. Because I don’t want him to get melanoma. Am I ‘inappropriate’?”
… each of us feels less futile, less helpless, and less alone, even when, ironically, what we come to understand is the fact that each of us is basically helpless and alone in the face of cosmic indifference.
"- but I'm a writer, too," the professor said. "I know it's like to be distracted. To seek out distractions. To exhaust yourself every other little thing rather than face a blank page."
