When we finally circled back to the cabin and shed our fur in exchange for skin, I pushed Nicolae up against the outside wall and kissed him hard.
He laughed at my desperation and I nipped at his bottom lip, tasting blood. He tangled his fist in my hair and jerked my head back with a scolding look. “Behave yourself.”
“Fuck me and I will,” I muttered.
“Oh?” He arched an eyebrow. “And here I thought I was going to reward you by trying something different.”
Ellie watched me, searching my face intently. “You really trust him, don’t you?”
“I do,” I answered, no hesitation.
“With your life?” she challenged.
“With something a hell of a lot more important than that.”
Her indignation turned to sadness. “You’re not a wolf. You don’t have to go through this ridiculous tradition just to protect me.”
“Have to? No. But I’m going to.”

Nicolae gave me the filthiest look yet and turned back to Kel. “How do you fix this?”
“It’s incurable.”
“Bullshit,” Nicolae snarled, flinging everything off the counter with one swipe.
“Nick!” I snapped. Kel didn’t seem phased.
“What about a lung transplant?” he demanded.
“He wouldn’t receive approval, not at this stage. The chances of success, even if he was approved —“
“Fuck the chances, and fuck the list. I’ll find some fucker with good lungs and cut them out myself.”

“Would you just stand up?” I muttered, looking around. We were still being watched. Now there was a fucking crowd.
“Say ‘yes.’”
Now he was using humiliation rather than compulsion to force my hand. Prick. “Yes,” I growled through my teeth.
He gave me a victorious smirk as he rose to tower over me once more. “There, that wasn’t so hard, was it?”
“I can’t believe you.”
“You said yes, didn’t you?”
“That doesn’t mean anything!”

He pulled something out of his jacket and I began to reconsider the possibility that I was dreaming, or hallucinating, when he got down on one knee. A few wolves who were walking across the corridor gave us some strange glances, but they didn’t say a word. “Say ‘yes.’ And remember, I can make you.” He said it in a wry tone, but the look in his eyes made me doubt he was entirely joking.
Karanlık ama romantik.
“Tell me something,” he demanded, brushing his lips over my jaw with tenderness that felt cruel. “Why do I want to open you up and pour myself into you until there is no part of you that isn’t tainted by me?”
Nicolae took my hand and led me down the other hall. When we reached his room, he locked the door and my heart leaped. I’d been ready to collapse a minute ago, but suddenly, the idea of staying awake for a little bit longer didn’t seem that bad.
“I feel like I haven’t had you alone in a long time,” he murmured, starting to unbutton my shirt.
“I need your help with an experiment. Try to compel Jack.”
I didn’t like the way his face lit up at the prospect, and I especially didn’t like that he looked at me like a dog that had just been given permission to eat the cat. “To do what?”
“Something he’d object to.”
“Nicolae!”
Mason set his eyes on me, smirking. “Get down on your knees.”
“Go to hell,” I growled. I could feel the push to obey, but after resisting compulsion so recently, it came a bit easier.
“Well, I don’t want her out there. It’s almost dark.”
Mason arched his eyebrow and scowled around his cigarette. “She’s an Alpha. There’s nothing worse out there.”
Katılıyorum.
“So… you’ll be hunting me?” I asked warily.
“When the full moon comes, yes. But don’t worry, I don’t bite humans,” he said with a wink.
I did not believe him. No one with a smile that charming was up to anything good.
