She looked away up at the sun-filled sky and down again and straight at me, and in a shattering moment of awareness I saw the pain and the cracks behind the bright public façade.
“Does that word mean nothing to you?” I say.
“What word?” asks Kat.
“Love,” I say. “You use it a lot.”
“I have infinite love to give,” Kat says to the sky.
“Right,” I say to my shoes.
