Annesi, Inger Margrethe Gaarder öğretmendi ve çocuk kitapları yazarıydı. Babası, Knut Gaarder Oslo'da kolej müdürlüğü yapıyordu. 1971'te Oslo Katedral Okulunu bitirdi. 1974'te evlendi. 1976 ve 1983 yıllarında iki oğlu oldu. 1976'da Oslo Üniversitesinde İskandinav dilleri (Norveççe), düşünce tarihi ve dinler tarihinden lisans eğitimini tamamladı. 1981'de Ailece Bergen'e yerleştiler. Jostein Gaarder Fana Kolejinde on yıl boyunca felsefe ve edebiyat öğretmenliği yaptı. 1991'de Jostein Gaarder tam zamanlı yazar oldu.
