The awareness of human separation, without reunion by love—is the source of shame. It is at the same time the source of guilt and anxiety.
1838’de Caroline Norton, The Separation of Mother and Child by the Laws of Custody of Infants Considered (Çocukların Velayeti Yasalarına Göre Anne ve Çocuğun Ayrılmaları) başlıklı bir kitapçık kaleme aldı. Caroline bununla yetinmedi. Bir yıl sonra, A Letter to the Queen on Lord Chancellor Cranworth’s Marriage and Divorce Bill’i (Adalet Bakanı Cranworth’ın Evlilik ve Boşanma Yasa Önerisi Hakkında Kraliçeye Mektup) kaleme aldığı değerlendirmede şunları vurguluyordu:
For me nothing is more dangerous than recollection. Once I have recalled some life-situation it ceases to exist. People say that separation helps to revive love. That is quite true, but it revives it in a purely poetic way. A life in recollection is the most perfect imaginable; memory gives you your fill more abundantly than all of reality and has a security which no reality possesses.
His religion was – in the Pietist tradition – non-sectarian and ecumenical. He was opposed to the complete separation of church and state sought by the liberals, and he did not believe that religion was a purely private affair. Bismarck did not share the left-liberal hope that religion would ultimately wither away as a social force. He was thus unnerved by the anti-clerical and secularizing energies released by the Kulturkampf .
