this made me want to read ovid's metamorphosis as soon as possible. even though i put it in my reading lists so many times, because i know i will like it too much, i wanted to have it in my hands first, for writing on it some stuff definitely will be necessary. but buying the book will take more time, still it will be one of my priorities. also d. h. lawrence will be waiting only a little more i presume, this book effected me on these parts.
it was really well written, it had me with the beauty of the abnormal because... the beauty of the abnormal... yes. but in what way? in exactly the way dorcas always sees it. only when you make it sexual and vicious like an animal. the animalistic side of the humans. always dangerous, always unpredictible, vicious, vigorous, violent, passionate, even crazy.
there's not much to say without ruining the beauty of the book, it feels like talking about what's happened inside the book will take away all the gothic and dreamy air it has inside like a living being loses air while opening its mouth, and breathing. careful, read this book, and close it gently before the words escape from the pages. the diffusion force would want to make that happen but be careful, don't allow it to happen. it is very dense inside.
19.yüzyılda yazılan bu eser Rus Edebiyatının en önemli eserlerinden biri. Rus Edebiyatını Dostoyevski ile tanıyan biri olarak Turgenyev'in tarzı bana biraz farklı geldi. Aynı dönemlerde yaşamış bu iki yazarın farklı olması geldikleri sınıflardan kaynaklı, Dostoyevski fakir bir aileden geliyorken Turgenyev soylu bir aileden geliyor. Dönemi daha iyi analiz edebilmek için her iki yazarı okumuş olmak önemli.
Kitap her dönemin sorunu olan kuşak çatışmasını ele alıyor, hani derler ya 'ah bu gençlik nereye gidiyor' diye, o gençlik her dönem bir önceki nesilden farklı yerlere gitti. Nikolay Petroviç Kirsanov ve Pavel Petroviç Kirsanov bir çiftlik evinde yaşayan aristokrat aileden gelme iki kardeştir. Nikolay gençliğinde geçirdiği bir sakatlık neticesinde askerliğe gidemeyip Petersburg'da üniversite okudu. General bir babanın memur oğlu olarak hayatını devam ettirdi. Ağabeyi Pavel ise asker oldu. 1859'da 40'ı geçkin yaşlarda olan bu iki kardeşten sadece Nikolay evlendi, o da karısını 1847'de kaybetti fakat çok sevdiği Arkadiy adında bir oğlu var.
Kitap Nikolay'ın uzaklardan gelecek olan oğlu Arkadiy'i kapıda bekleyişiyle başlıyor. Arkadiy 1855'de Petersburg'da üniversiteye başlamıştı, 1859'da ise arkadaşı Yelgeniy Vasilyev Bazarov ile babasının çiftlik evine adımını atıyor. Bazorov, Arkadiy'in yakın arkadaşı, o dönemin gençliğini yansıtan bir doktor adayı, bir nihilist, dini, sanatı ve duygusallığı reddeden ancak ve ancak bilime önem veren bir genç. Bu yüzden Pavel Petroviç ile sürekli tartışmaları oluyor. Pavel aristokrat oluşunu bir gurur olarak taşırken, Bazarov aristokratları aşağılıyor, Pavel'in bir köylük yerde şık giyimini gülünç buluyor. that was the second time i read this and this time it was an english translation of the original. at the last time, i read this play with turkish translation and i won't hesitate to say that the turkish translation is ten times better than the english one, for these publishers at least. i read it from penguin publishing house and it was mid, as i can say. but it was still joyful to reread this play in another language and think about the things that are happening in a different point of view than the other. i felt there are little differencies on the events too but those are probably the translators' choices of continuing of the story. also thanks to the informations i had after reading it for the first time, it felt easier to understand some stuff they talked about at the second reading.
i know this play is worth reading even for the third time and how much would i want to read it in its original language, in ancient greek next... perhaps that can happen in the future, who knows?
Kitabı hep heh işte bu yüzden diye okudum. Sanki kitapta hep içimde düşündüğüm ama bi türlü dillendirmediğim şeyleri dillendiriyor gibi hissettim. Sürekli hak verdim ve sürekli kendimle bağdaştırdım. Size kitapta neler anlatıldığını ve nasıl bağladığımı anlatacağım. Ben bir hemşireyim ve ona yönelik bağlayacağım. Başka meslek gruplarına yazdıklarım ulaşsın çok isterim. Her meslekte işler nasıl yürüyor gerçekten merak ediyorum.

War Doesn't Make Heroes, It Erases PeopleRoman
I must say the book is much more better than it's movie. And also I must add that I believe it’s one of the most powerful anti-war novels ever written. The story follows a young German soldier fighting in World War I, and basically shows how war destroys not just bodies, but the minds and humanity as well.
The book is not about heroism or glory. It is the real face of war. Paul (our main character)and his friends start the war full of idealism, but as they face death, dirt, hunger and the total pointlessness of it all, they slowly lose their humanity.
Everything in the book is given in detail. The front is brutal. But even when they go back home for a break/leave, they feel like they don’t belong there anymore. War has broken their connection to their home or homeland, too.
The writing is simple and direct, I loved it. There is no fancy stuff, just the harsh but really harsh reality.
In the end Paul, our hero, dies quietly. Noone cares about it. After all fighting, and loss, Paul’s death barely matters to anyone. He becomes just another nameless casualty in a war.
The book has got a brutal, cold ending, but that’s exactly the point: the war doesn’t make heroes; it erases people.
The book is actually a great study on the human condition. As a french literature student, i analyzed this book, however i don’t have any energy to write all my analysis down here. All i’m going to say is that it has a very pessimistic and dark tone, be prepared for an incredibly dreary and dull reading experience. Yeah, it’s all about the ‘war is absurd’ stuff. The philosophies of existentialism and absurdity; the ideas of anti-colonialism, anti-capitalism, anti-nationalism and nihilism are very prevalent in this book. Personally, i geniunely hated every page of it but i had to read it for a class. I’ll probably never come back to this.
