1926'da Londra'da doğdu. İngilizce yazan en etkili sanat eleştirmenlerinden biri olan Berger, ayrıca senaryo yazarı, romancı ve belgesel yazarı olarak da tanınıyor. İlk romanı 1958'de yayımlanan "Zamanımızın Bir Ressamı"dır. Romanı "G." İle 1972 yılında Booker ödülünü almıştır. Metis Yayınları yazarın klasikleşmiş yapıtı Görme Biçimleri'nin (1986) yanı sıra, Picasso'nun Başarısı ve Başarısızlığı (1988), Düğüne (1997), Alain Tanner ile birlikte yazdığı 2000 Yılında 25 Yaşına Basacak Olan Yunus (1997), Görünüre Dair Küçük Bir Teoriye Doğru Adımlar (1999) ve Fotokopiler (1999) adlı kitaplarıyla, özellikle görsellik üzerine denemelerini bir araya getiren O Ana Adanmış (1988) adlı seçkisini yayımlamıştır. Berger'ın son romanı Kral ise 2001 yılında Müge Gürsoy Sökmen çevirisiyle yayımlandı.
